How to re-wire broken CMOC connectors and Mark Levinson CMOC receptacle
Call Chris at Pyramid Audio, sounds like you need at least one new camac on the 23Those camac connectors will short out the signal (buzzing) if the insulating insert gets damaged and the connector touches the chassis. Ebay has camac insulators and...
Ayre QB9 or Schiit Gungir Multibit
You can order a Gungnir for a 15-day trial (it will cost you 5% plus shipping if you send it back). There are two types of people: those who love the Schiit product line and those who hate them. Best if you listen for yourself.
Do classical CDs made from early analog tapes sound better on your system than new CDs?
Yes, especially the ones from HighDefTapeTransfers.com and PristineClassical.comAlso, the AAD/ADD discs I have from the 80's do sound a lot better through the Schiit Yggdrasil than any other CD/DAC I've had.
Speaker level uneven
I would suspect power supply filter capacitors. If that's the case, the fix is to replace them and should be done by a qualified service technician.
Power Conditioner Advice please...
You should check your electrical panel ground connection from end to end and see that it’s not loose or corroded. Any external EMI from commercial motors, etc., can make that induced noise worse through poor grounding.
Cary SLI-80 with one blown rectifier tube, BUT STILL WORKS just fine. How?
Al:Same picture I saw. The diodes are under the rectifier sockets and have the black heat shrink. The heavy red ac wires enter the anodes and the cathodes are connected to pins 4 and 6 and then they’re jumped over to the second tube socket. The re...
Cary SLI-80 with one blown rectifier tube, BUT STILL WORKS just fine. How?
There are diodes in series to protect the power supply circuit. Just saw a picture of the innards of the amp. The rectifiers are tied in parallel to the AC mains and the diodes are upstream of pins 4 and 6.What happens is that if either rectifier ...
Is Direct Current An Option?
DC at the wall outlets would make audio equipment with a transformer stop working.
Hum problem
Could be induced hum (it doesn't do it in the tech's system). Is it possible to move the amplifier to another corner of the room and see if there's any change?
Cary SLI-80 with one blown rectifier tube, BUT STILL WORKS just fine. How?
See if the tube is cold (carefully!). If it's cold and no glow, tube is dead and will not work. The only explanation is there has to be a diode in series with the rectifier.
What’s your favorite recording of Mahler’s 8th Symphony?
Horenstein (London Symphony Orchestra 1959). One of the best, performance-wise in my opinion, and with Pristineclassical.com remaster it in 24-bit stereo makes it that much better than the BBC Legends release.
A better lamp cord for my stereo equipment?
If that older equipment is Class II double insulated then no service tech is going to play around with changing power cords unless the new cord fits into the existing grommet and the cord has no grounding conductor. So if that lamp cord on your un...
Loud popping sounds after warm-up
If the popping is just as loud with the volume down and is in one channel, I would suspect a bad solder joint on or near an output transistor.
New Yggdrasil - First (and second) Impressions
The Yggy is plain awful for the first couple of weeks -- too bright and a condensed front to back soundstage.Wait after a month of being continually powered on and you will hear a profound difference -- especially on red book CD's.
Psychological effects of volume control
Sounds like the old DAC had a higher output voltage. Generally, preamps see 2VAC (single ended) from sources but some CD players and DACs put out as much as 8 volts.
