are there any fans of the Oppo BDP-95 out there? (vs. Oppo 105D).

Used Oppo players are a great bargain. I never owned a 95, but like you I bought a new 105D, which was good. When the last batch of 205 players became available, the company reached out to me to be put on the list to purchase one. I bought a new 205 and it sounds better than the 105, so I'm happy with it. I recommended Oppo to a friend of mine. He was looking to buy a new and inexpensive cd player. He bought a used 103 in excellent condition for a cheap price. He keeps thanking me for the advice. In the past I read many articles about people using 95s and they really liked them.  

I read the oppo 95 has good power and I won’t be surprise OP if it’s better than 105D.

I like mine a lot. Sounds good 2-channel out into my preamp, also as a transport via SPDIF into my DAC.

I wish it had HDMI input on the front panel like the later models.

I've been recording music DVDs using Mac software called Toast.  One disk can hold over 8 hours of music.  All AIFF files 24/192  It's a great way to go!

I think they changed to ESS Sabre DAC in the 103/105.  I prefer my 105 to the ninety series, but ymmv

Yes- the BDP-95 uses two ES9018 DACs. While, the BDP-105D employs two ESS Sabre 32 DACs.

 

I was never impressed by a stock 105D fro Audio playback. Modding this player makes it better.

I remember the 95 being a little smoother with less detail. The 105 series digs deeper which tilts it towards a little clinical at times. So just depends on your system and preferences. They are both good for the price if you can find one in good shape these days. 

Thanks for your input.  I second your opinion that the 95 is smoother, more forgiving. More tube like.

The only issue is the fan noise, but that's not a major problem.

I've heard that dacs on the BDP-205 are excellent too,  But they are very pricey even on eBay.. Haven't heard one yet.

Just wanted to add an update as to why the Oppo BDP 95 may sound better than the BDP 105.  I found the following an another forum;

It appears that the difference in sound quality claimed by some is due to the way the

audio is allocated to the DAC(s). In the BDP-95, apparently in stereo mode all 8

channels in the DAC are used (4 for Left, 4 for right), but in the BDP-105, only two

channels in one of the DACs are utilized for stereo, with the rest dedicated to other

functions (headphone amp, I think, while the second DAC's 8 channels are dedicated

to 7 + 1 surround, if I remember correctly).

So from a design standpoint, it seems there's a lot more 'processor power' (for lack of

a more correct way to say it) devoted to stereo sound on the BDP-95 than with the

BDP-105.

I probably didn't explain what I was trying to say very well, the following comments

Q: Does the lack of non-4+4 DAC stacking affect the audio performance?

A: During the initial design stage, OPPO simply continued the BDP-95 approach by

stacking 4 pairs of DAC for each Left and Right channel. However due to the

complexity brought in by the newly added headphone amp and USB DAC, OPPO

could not achieve an ideal PCB layout. The analog specifications became slightly

worse than the BDP-95 in this 4 stacked configuration. OPPO's audio engineers and

consultants analyzed the problem and made many experiments to further enhance the

quality of the analog output stage of the BDP-105. In the end, they decided that the

only way to ensure maximum performance was to separate the current-to-voltage

conversion stages for each output path. This change enables us to have a much cleaner

PCB layout which minimizes interference and crosstalk. It also eliminates the

possibility of the load on one output path affecting the other paths. The drawback is

that BDP-105 now loses the benefits of the thermal noise cancellation by stacking 4

DACs. The engineers were able to make up for that by designing an improved power

supply, optimizing the filter and drive stages, and beefing up the power and ground

paths.

@lovepianos i agree with you on the bdp95--i think it's quite extraordinary as a player, while the 103 (which i still use) and 105 always sounded a bit overbright/digital to me.the 95 seems to be going for $300-400 on ebay compared to $600-800 for the 105; good deal for a universal player.

Own one. Built like a russian tank and great platform for concert dvd's

I have a 103D and hardly used it and haven't used it in years. My dedicated stereo equipment is at a different level and I can't stand to watch 1080P video. I had a chance to buy their best Blu Ray model before they stopped selling players but didn't do it. Wishing I would have bought that.
