It would be helpful if you told us where you're located and perhaps which DAC you have.
Audiophile Equipment Repair?
Looking for recommendations for a place/person who works on audio equipment. My DAC has a broken (snapped off due to my clumsiness) COAX port on the back that needs replacing. Seems like a fairly simply repair, but I'm not qualified to attempt it. Would appreciate a name and email for someone with the right skills for this.
elliottbnewcombjr: I imagine you're correct, although knowing audiophile replacement parts might not be in their wheelhouse. |

Not in your region, but a plug for my area: I have the good fortune of having found a competent electronics repair guy who has worked on my Mark Levinson 390s, my Magnum Dynalab Etude, as well as other equipment. Electro Tech Services in the Montrose area of Glendale CA. (He used to be in Pasadena.) Tel (626) 792-4145 (I hope he is unaffected by the wildfire.) |
elliottbnewcombjr Thanks, sent them an email. Waiting for a reply. |
wturkey Thanks, I've bought from them before. I wasn't aware they do repairs. |
bigkidz Thanks for the offer. I think I've found a local person who can do the repair. I'll let you know if it doesn't work out. |
here in Williamsburg, just down the road from you. Our local guy is an arrogant bastard, but endearingly so. He'll first tell you that you can't afford him, also tell you it will be several months - while his wife is giving you a nod behind his back that he's exaggerating. Place is called Action Electronics. You have Audio Exchange in Richmond, they do repairs, had them refurbish a Carver Receiver back in the day. Bought my Bluesound Vault there while I was shopping for amplifiers 2 years ago. They frown on Chi Fi equipment due to their military background - as far as I can gather, but otherwise they are pleasant, not as much character as our guy in Williamsburg... |
katzenjammer27Hey from Richmond. Thanks for the info. I talked to the fellow you mentioned about three years ago and was going to contact him about this, but couldn’t remember his name or contact info. Yes, he’s a funny guy. When I asked him about doing a relatively simple update on my $10k CD transport he snarled a bit saying he doesn’t work on CD stuff. He eventually said he might consider it--if I could afford him. I eventually went with someone else who was considerably more open to doing the update.I did contact Audio Exchange about the repair. He declined, telling me to send it back to the manufacturer. I’m guessing what you said about his anti-China sentiment influenced his decision. Ironic considering almost everything electronic comes from there, with the notable exception of high-end, boutique audiophile gear. Anyway, I think I’m set having found someone local whom I know and trust. Thanks, again. |
devinplombier I really believe trolls should refrain from posting annoying comments. |
@devinplombier, I do not own a motorcycle, I own 2 vehicles which I am not ever going to work on. Where do you get off saying we should be able to fix our own stuff? At my age, they aren’t even steady enough to solder, so by your thinking, I shouldn’t have high end equipment? That blanket statement wasn’t very helpful or intelligent. |
Honestly I hate repairing things in my electronics or home, but the lack of qualified techs (including plumbers, electricians, etc.), time to get the work done and costs really force my hand at times. I don't think an audiophile should necessarily be able to effect simple repairs, but those who do will spend more time listening to their gear than those who don't. |
Ok. Maybe I should have written: "I believe that electronics repair is a really useful skill for audiophiles to have". Yea, I think I'll stick with that.
That's the idea!
