Happy Listening!
Sounds pretty good for '81. I like the fact that it comes from the PA feed > SBD > Reels. Dave L mentioned Healy did that here and definitely becomes a much "fuller" sound than most early '80's SBD's. Just ripped to Flac for the seamless LLR>China>Rider closer. NO gaps!!!! Really good China > Rider Listen to Jerry's ending notes to IKYR... He's got some angst in him!! Go Jer !!! |

Hey Randy 11 & Jafant - Are you looking for Sound Test audiophile examples of the Plangent process (before & after)? If that's what you were referencing, here ya go: http://www.plangentprocesses.com/examples.htm |

Dave's Process for audio extraction for releases: http://audiophilereview.com/analog/plangent---a-better-way-to-transfer-analog-tape.html Time consuming but worth it. Quote: I've used Plangent Processes on a variety of projects for the Grateful Dead on older 16 track tapes as well as 2-track 7.5 ips material. The benefits of using the Plangent Process were added imaging, and outstanding clarity of the audio and pitch solidification...while keeping the original analog warmth. |
@jond quote: Raymonda I'm good thanks I have Charlie Millers version of it and it sounds amazing, I've shared it with a few folks here myself. _______________________________ Charlie doesn't have a 5-8-77 release. The 5-8-77 sbd comes from Hicks. still good. Next yrs 40th ANNY should be blessed with the new Betty's (count on it) |
LAte to the Party... but the Dave's picks releases are using technology to "retrieve" better sound quality than was available during the Dick's Picks era. maybe they will re-release some selected shows from the Dick's Picks releases... there are also some ownership issues around some recordings, e.g. Bear's Choice, IIRC |
The Daves Picks that have been coming out are not well mastered in my opinion. They are very dark and just not EQ'd like Dead music should be. When you compare the quality to the earlier Dicks Picks, it is quite a difference. I was being lambasted for that opinion on Hoffman forums but it's very easy to hear if you have a good system. |
@garebear Yeah that's funny, upon first listen to the 24/192 July 78 "Bettyboards" shows, one of the things that jumped out was how badly off key Donna's vocals were in some spots. Never been a fan of her, but this was the most obvious vocal crime I've heard recently. I will keep your comments in mind about the fast tempo, etc. next time I listen to them. Overall I like the mix of playlists from these 5 shows. Cheers, Spencer |
Hello Jafant - I received my 78 Red Rocks box set and I must say that I was not impressed. You will note that I have and can say with conviction every disc / box set and current subscriptions issued for and by the Grateful Dead .....and this box set is NOT one of my favorites. The Europe 72 to give you a reference point is still my favorite as that was the Grateful Dead. They must have doing massive amounts of cocaine at these shows and at that time I do believe they were as the music's tempo is totally jacked up.....each song ends on the same type of crescendo....and Donna ought to have been shot for ruining each song with her off key singing ...no screaming on this tour. Bobby was not that far behind. Naaaw......not my favorite and the songs and set list were very predictable. I saw them in 78 .....but don't remember . |
Checked Tidal the other night. Seems most Dead stuff is on it . . . complete Dick's Picks, Road Trips, Download Series, Europe '72 series, etc., as well as original studio albums and Complete Studio Collection, Fare Thee Well, and Red Rocks, though no Dave's Picks. I wanted to listen to Fillmore 1969, but my fat finger hit Dick's Picks #36. Philadelphia 9/21/72. Huh? My first Dead show? I knew it was 1972, but didn't remember the exact date. Checked my ticket stub . . . Yup! Serendipity? Then, I relived it. Thank you Tidal! Also, Live Music Archive is available on my Squeezebox Touch . . . Dead recordings sorted by year. 2000+ shows? Not in MY lifetime! HAHA! |
