Klipsch Mod

I've upgraded the crossovers and internal wiring, lined the cabinets with anti-vibration sheets, upgraded the speaker connectors and I'm about to solder the speaker connections. (Waiting for Crites titanium tweeter diaphragms to be back in stock). Im considering putting in a high frequency attenuator like you see in older speakers like altec lansing santanas, Sony HPM 100s, etc. What do you think?

Very interesting... I have KG4s. I’m just curious as to the potential of these with mods. Currently the tweeter gives me a headache after 3 minutes and the upper bass is very flabby. Not much info under about 75 hz I figure.

Question about the LPad. Does it roll off the upper frequencies or does it just decrease the volume of the tweeter?

What Klipsch speakers do you have? What did you do the crossovers? If you think the original tweeters are shrill, the TI tweeters will be worse. Yes, they will need a L-Pad.

Forget about the Crites tweeters, get Dave's machined tweeter, these are a true upgrade, and we will work with you to build a L-Pad to fit your speakers and sound.

As others have said, reinforcing the cabinet works really well, depending on what speakers, there are some very specific things to make them work better. It's amazing for how popular Klipsch speakers are, they are in fact built cheaply, and respond so well to some common fixes.

Al the ALK CX guy retired several years ago, thus is no long making anything new. Crites does make a couple ALK type XO's, or you can build your own.

Also on my Cornwalls & Chorus ll, I did the same thing.

I don't recall what speakers you have.

Agree with big_greg that the KG-4 works well with Sub as they really don't have a woofer.

I would stop spending money on those speakers.  I like Klipsch speakers and mods can help, but you'd be better off getting something in the Heritage line if you want to do mods.

The Crites tweeters are worthwhile if you're going to keep them.  If you don't like the bass, get a subwoofer or two and high pass them.  You can also try adding some weight (around 2 - 3 ounces) to the passive driver.  I have not done that mod, but have read of it being done with Quartets and Fortes with good results.

KG4s. I did consider putting in front to back baffles to stiffen the front but in the end didn't.

What model Klipsch ? The reason I ask is some have added stiffness to the front     ( baffle / motor board ? ) and I thought that was interesting. Plus I have a pair of Heresy II’s begging for an upgrade. Cheers , Mike.

You can damp the tweeter and mid with bits of black gorilla tape stuck to the outside of the wave guides. It doesn’t take much, and you wont be mucking around with repeatedly removing the front panel to make adjustments. The black tape is pretty much invisible unless someone gets up close.

Padding the interior and damping the bass basket never worked for me in my situation. It over-damped and deadened everything. The only other thing I did was to insert a a stick-on vinyl footed 18 lb lead weight through the front ports to rest on the bottom plate of the cabinet. I would try these things before spending lots of money on room correction.

My Klipsch is a Cornwall 4.

The ALK looks interesting but you can’t adjust on the fly... Hoping the Crites Ti diaphragm will just make the shrillness go away and I won't need any attenuation control on the speaker at all.

Yeah, I bought L-pads, just wondering whether to install them or not... These speakers will be used with a Marantz 2245 receiver so I'll have tone controls...

You want L Pads, not Pots. L Pads do not alter the impedance, Pots do. My L-Pads from Parts Express are 16 ohm for my 16 ohm speakers.

Speakers are like blind people who have been kidnapped. They do not know where they are being taken/kept. Possibly moved to a different hangout at any time.

I am a big fan of adjusting mids to the woofer and adjusting tweeters to the mids: in the space they will be used, for the ears that will be hearing them.

I use a SPL meter on a tripod at listening position and take my time with this CD’s test tones. Last time took 1-1/2 days, they never sounded better!

Pots are better than no control, I restored two pairs of AR-2ax's, replaced original pots with new pots on 1 pair for my office and refurbed original Pots for the pair in my Garage/Shop system. And a member here send me a full set of good original Pots as spares. Thanks again for that generosity!

Yup. Did that. Yeah I'm reticent about putting some cheap $15 attenuator into the signal path...

Damp the horns (mids and highs) and the woofer baskets with Dynamat, or a similar material. A great sq upgrade. Forget the attenuators.
