Looking To Match A Tube Amp With A Pair Of Audio Note AN-K/Spe

I'm the original owner of a pair of K's which I've had for about 9 months. I really enjoy them and they're placed in a 30 x 12 room with a sofa bordering 10' of that 30. I listen about 10-12 feet away. Speakers toed in accordingly. Pushed by a Pass XA 30.8. Preamp is a Backert Labs Rhumba Extreme. I'm overall pretty pleased with this set up but am searching for greater punch and clarity in the midrange frequencies at lower volume levels. I'd like opinions on 2A3 or 300B SET's or EL 34 or 84 push pull as a means of addressing this. Thanks for input.  -Scott

At the recent Capital Audiofest, Vu set up Audio Note room at their behest.  His store is extraordinarily interesting—all of the gear (except trade-ins) is tube-based, and some of it is the store’s own build or items built in collaboration with a builder in Italy who specializes in Western Electric rebuilds and reproductions.  I’ve been there and witnessed numerous shoppers experience an audio revelation from hearing properly set up Audi Note gear.  An even more profound shock awaits those who hear the Deja Vu-built custom horn speaker systems that utilize vintage drivers or reproductions of vintage drivers.  This place must be experienced by anyone who can get to the DC area.

Vu is the man when it comes to Audio Note. The Audio Note OTO is the bomb with the K’s. I’ve got the AN E’s and found they work better with SET’s or EL34’s.

No Vu Hoang is the owner of Deja Vu Audio and has the best ears in the business in my opinion.

I agree with twolefears. Call VU as he VERY knowledgeable on tune amps and has some amazing gear - both new and vintage.

Thank you all for these helpful responses. The attack will be incremental. I've ordered AN Lexus speaker cable (my setup requires 3M runs), and a single 2M length of AN-Vx interconnect between transport and DAC. I use the transport quite a bit. We'll see how that goes for a while. Thinking I'm going to save my pennies for a pair of Empress SET's. -Scott

A very good match wld be the oto signature. It's 10 watts only but has fantastic punch ( even on some other lower sensitive speakers). Also you cld try the Spe speaker cable , which will increase clarity in general and is the same wire as in your an-ks

845 SETs are a great compromise between lower powered SETs and push/pull tubes. Cheers,

Call Vu at Deja Vu in Washington DC.  The store is Audio Note and low-powered tube specialists.

Pass Labs are polite. So a good push-pull tube amp should make the ANs sing. However, have you tried a different preamp?

Hey Scott great speakers! I run a pair of AN-J/lx's with a 15 watt pushpull 2a3 amp to great effect. I am a fan of the 2a3 tube over the 300B, to me the 2a3 is more transparent with more drive than the 300B. However as with all things YMMV. I will say that's a pretty large room for K's do you listen loud?
