Mid Fi streaming question.

Hi all , I’m currently at the Mid Fi level and in the process of improving my system. My current streaming setup is an Innuos Pulse Mini with an aftermarket LPS feeding an original Schiit Yiggy with an updated Gen 5 USB. I’m running a Wireworld Starlight Platinum USB to the Yiggy and Morrow level 5 IC’s to my pre. I’m currently running single ended and will be going to a higher quality balanced rig. I believe that my streaming rig is already the weak link in my system even before I go to the new setup. But I have an issue even it this point. The music sounds acceptable under the circumstances about 2/3 of the time. The rest of the time it has a more hollow sound and a bit more glare. My exact question is , I am hardwired but have a real hodgepodge of a connection due to structural limits. I have ATT in via coax to a modem/ router. I have a cat 5 out to the other end of the house but dead end before I reach my destination. From there I have a TP-Link outlet adapter that the Cat cable plugs into. Then in my living room the other wall outlet adapter with a cat cable to the Innuos. I know it’s a real mess  and need a solution to the 6 items linked together that use my house circuit to carry the signal. However until I can get someone to run a dedicated line that will be 150 feet long and have to use an outside wall , any suggestions? My initial thoughts are to use some kind of Ethernet isolation filter. I see cheap ones on Amazon and some nicer ones that run about $300-400. My goal is to clean this up as I expect an improvement will definitely be had and eventually I’ll upgrade my steamer. Thanks in advance for not burning me at the stake. Respectfully, Mike B.

Nothing about your system indicates glare to me although things like power cords or power conditioning can also be part of the picture, and I’d upgrade to CAT 6 if you’re using 5.  That said, several people here have had a positive experience with this Stack Audio SmoothLAN filter.  I believe they offer a return policy so may be worth a shot.

Start with using a wifi extender to get the signal directly from your router and sending it to your streamer via a short ethernet cable would probably result in a much cleaner signal than a combination of long cables.

@soix , Thanks the Stax filter is on my short list. I have a Richard Gray power filter, Hubble medical outlets , Morrow and Analysis Plus power cables. The SQ issue I intermittently experience is mostly during the daytime. I’ve given consideration to house lighting, appliances, and air conditioning. My thought is that with everything turned on during the daytime and my internet signal being transmitted through the house wiring is if the elevated activity causes the SQ difference. In doing some forum reading I see that some have gone to great extremes such as an optic link to avoid added interference and jitter. But I’m at the start of this learning curve. Thanks , Mike B.

If something is sonically happening between daytime vs evenings, I’d suspect it’s a power quality fluctuations from others on your power grid - busier during daytime, less during evenings.

Another vote for power conditioner or similar device. Just make sure it's something substantial rather than the "fancy power strip" type which doesn't really do much.

I've had good luck over the years with balanced power units such as EquiTech, Bryston, and Taurus. Audience Adept Response and Running Springs Audio also gave positive results in some systems.

I moved to a new room last year and compared the long BJC Ethernet run to a TP-Link Wi-Fi extender with a short piece of decent Ethernet to my Innuos. The long run added some noise/glare, the Wi-Fi extender was better. I then added a Smoothlan to that setup and things settled down even more.

I have the same WW USB cable, that is a good one. Power conditioning is probably an issue as others have stated, but more expensive to fix. One thing at a time.

   I have power conditioning within reason. I’m not having this issue with my Thorens TT, my MF cd transport or my Oppo 105. I have 4 pairs of speakers and am presently running Tekton DI’s with upgraded crossovers and Townsend Podiums. I don’t feel the “ Glare “ is a speaker/ room issue but more of my description as to a tonal change. As I stated above it’s only with my streamer and it’s very distinct and it’s either there or not.  I’m sure that the overall power source affects the entire picture , however I tend to feel it’s mostly induced through the TP link magnifying it during times of noisy power.

@zlone @soix , Thanks to both of you. I’m going to purchase the Smoothlan and give that a try. I’m not sure long term what I will do for power conditioning. I’m doing a huge kitchen remodel next month that includes a couple new circuits. Most of my gear is packed away, but I want to deal with this Ethernet issue first. My pending remodel will take 2 months and impact my kitchen, den and living room. When complete I am setting up a fresh pair of Rogue M-180 Darks, Rogue Hera, and all the front end stuff mentioned above. My current plan is to run my front end gear through the Dan Gray and plug the mono blocks straight into the Hubble outlets. If I don’t go broke during the remodel I plan on getting two dedicated 20 amp circuits for my monos and pending subs. In the short term I just need to deal with my current issue. Thanks , Mike B.

Improving the quality of the streamer is probably the single most significant item in the chain. You are getting the bits. A high quality steamer with significantly improve the sound quality. Small incremental improvements in infrastructure can also make small incremental improvements. You can choose... you get lots of other improvements with a better streamer. I have an outstanding vinyl system that often is bested by my digital system running off a wifi extender.

@ghdprentice , I totally understand, hence my “ MidFi “ statement. Due to budget limitations I will probably never get to your level of gear. However I am planning on a better steamer after I get my gear set up and my room treatments dialed in. Your system is quite impressive and I appreciate your input. Regards, Mike B.

@ghdprentice 👍

I use a TP-LINK router with a TP-LINK extender with great results. I try to only give tips to people who ask for it if I have hands on experience with their issue. I hope the OP will pay it attention. His custom wired connection from router to streamer lives me baffled.

@baylinor , So please enlighten me. If I have a streamer that does not have WIFi, how would I use your setup ? FWIT my previous streamer had WIFi, and I ran a dedicated high power gaming WiFi devise for it. Since the Innuos does not have WiFi ability, I replaced the gaming WiFi steamer with the powerline adapter because I can’t get an Ethernet cable to it without ceiling or wall access. So please enlighten me. And yes I will fund a better streamer down the road.

As I said earlier, you run an ethernet cable from the extender to the Innuos streamer. I have an Innuos streamer too. Meaning the extender receives the wifi signal from your router but it sends the signal to your streamer via an ethernet cable connection.

@baylinor . 10/4, I was under the impression that the extender was a transmitter and didn’t understand that its pairs with a receiver. I’ll give one a try , old age is rearing it’s ugly head and coupled with the meds I must take has really clouded my cognitive abilities. My apologies and thank you.

@baylinor @ghdprentice . Ok with my head clearly removed from my ass , I just purchased a TP-Link router and TP-Link Range Extender from Amazon. I’ll get it up and running Saturday. I also purchased a SmoothLan to try as I can always return it. If I may ask a couple random questions please. I see one of you lists optical isolation, how significant is that ? And at my price point I had considered the Innuos Pulse to replace the mini , any input would be appreciated. Thanks again for your patience, Mike B.

@buellrider97

I also use a TP-LINK router and extender. And I do use optical isolation. I actually tried the smoothLan but it actually muddled the sound in my system. Everything ends up being system dependent. Mine involves mostly better than average cables  in the $700 range each, expensive fuses, the use of a DDC to take advantage of I2s over USB. And believe it or not, I'm now at the point of fine tuning the sound with various isolation feet under every piece of equipment and I find my Innuos zenith mk3 streamer is particularly very sensitive to those. Point being, the journey to achieving a sound that's great to your ears is a long one. But you need to start somewhere. You are doing it right going with the extender, then listen for a couple weeks, add something else, listen to it for two more weeks and so on. Some stuff will work for you, some won't. But with patience you'll be rewarded. You can check my house of stereo for more info about my equipment. Digital was new to me a few years back and I persevered and like ghdprentice, it now sounds as good as my analog rig, or even better depending on the style of music. One last note, not sure about the Pulse vs the mini, but the word was the Zenith mk3 was the sweet spot in their line, between their lower models and their top of the line at twice the cost. I am very satisfied.

OP ..."old age is rearing its ugly head and coupled with the meds".

No problem, it happens. I thought yesterday was Tuesday, all day... left a restaurant before going in because it was open only Wednesday through Sunday. I was wondering why the lights were on.

  I’d like to thank everyone for their guidance, and again I apologize to all for being snippy. I purchased the TP-Link router, TP Extender and a higher level Ethernet cable. I also purchased the SmoothLan and it should arrive in a week. I also hear what some of you have said about my house power. I was of the mindset that it’s caused by the grid issue but after I change the Ethernet setup and then later add the SmoothLan for a trial I’ll revisit my power filter. I’m hoping I can get a solution with the two items pending. As everyone has stated it’s all pretty much system dependent and I’ll just have to experiment. In looking at some of your systems I realize how out of your league I am and truly appreciate your time. I’ll post my results soon. Regards, Mike B.
