Tekton First Time Buyer Prospect Seeking Advise from Tekton Owners

I am looking at trying out for the first time the Tekton speakers by getting the Mini-Lore Monitors

Questions:

  1.  Should I get the basic configuration withOUT any upgrades?
  2.  Should I get the tweeter upgrade only?
  3.  Should I get the upgrade package only? (upgrade internal wiring, bindings posts and cross over)
  4.  Should I get both the tweeter and the upgrade package?

I am asking because I am not sure how much improvement I would get with the upgrades. I am trying to assess if the upgrades are worth it based on Tekton owner experience.

Thank you.

Give the Lore a trial, I think Eric and crew still has his sale on. A very generous home trial with free shipping.

I returned the Enzo XLs for the Electron SE and must say "I nailed it" .. and very pleased.
No, not true at all. Stick with what you asked for in the first place, information from those with actual experience. Way too many people on this site blather about that which they know not. Don't be taken in.
Do the upgrade YOURSELF, and take pride in it, your choice of materials may be better then what he is offering you, we must remember this is a hobby, Cardas wire well I'll take that!! Bi-amp terminals why yes !! Soft dome YES YES YES. Money saved during a Covid Pandemic= priceless
I’ve owned Lores, DI’s, Moabs, 4-10 subs & the new Single Impact speaker. Listen to Millercarbon , the bigger the better.Sort of like Wieners
Another suggestion to get the most Tekton you can. If you are set on minitors I would purchase the Impacts. In my case, I was looking and after much thought "upgraded" my choice to the Double Impacts with standard upgrade ($300). A little more than I'd initially planned... Should have them early March. I echo @millercarbon, @gluoson, and others, get the most you can swing the first time. At the least I strongly consider upgrading to get the tweeter array. Good luck and happy listening. Let us know how your experience turns out!
I would give Eric a call and tell him about the speakers you have liked and don't like as well as your current plan. I am sure he will have some ideas of what should work for you.

Excellent idea.
If you are set on the brand (Tekton), follow millercarbon's recommendation "I would just get the most Tekton you can afford right now."

(broken clock, twice a day, and similar stories)

Great advise. :-)

I only have room for monitors; I use a subwoofer and I like the 2.1 set up. My plan is to start with the Mini-Lore Monitors then try out the Dynamites or the Impact Monitors, but those are $500 more than I would like to spend.

I have found out by trial an error that I do not like warm speakers. I have auditioned the ELAC Uni-Fi UB5 (first gen), Wharfedale Diamond 10.1, Revel M16, Vienna Acoustics Bach and the Polk Legend L100 and they were to veiled for me. Then I have listened to the Dali Zensor 1, Emotiva B1, and Klipsch Reference Premier towers  and they were too bright for music. I have the Bryston Mini A and the Monitor Audio Silver Rx-1 and they sound neutral to me. But I want to try out the Tektons. In RMAF 2019, I listen to them, but did not pay attention; they did not sound bad at all. I keep reading about them and the people that rave about them, etc.

Thanks again!!!
That mirrors advice teajay gave me, to stick with soft dome tweeters.

It may help to understand, a lot of the magic is in the MTM array. Eric's design philosophy is grounded in low mass/low stiction. Using an array of very small drivers (tweeters) to cover a range usually reserved for larger drivers (midrange) lowers mass tremendously and explains the extraordinary sound of Moab, Encore, Ulfberht. Double Impacts get a lot of that by having roughly half the MTM array. Then as you go down the line the same principle applies its just tapered off with smaller arrays, until eventually there is no array its just the drivers.

At that point his advantage is still there, because its still involved in selecting the drivers and crossovers and especially the cabinet. Guys hate me for pointing this out but the reality is most speakers are made for women, women don't want to see a speaker, so most speakers are way smaller than they should be. This makes it hard in so many ways. Eric avoids all of that with his designs.

This all adds up to a bottom line which is what nwres just said get the largest Tekton you can. But that advice sounds almost too simple to be true, which is why I take the time to explain all the reasoning behind why it is true.
Like MC said, get the Largest Tekton your budget allows. Do you have room for a tower? These will give you more full range sound. I get it the mini monitors are not a big risk $ wise, but I would consider the standard Lore or the Enzo XL at least if you can swing it and have the room. The $300 crossover and wire upgrade is a good choice. I personally would not get the BE tweet, some love it. But a friend of mine did get it, and now he regrets it, too bright for him (and me). And he just ordered a replacement speaker without the BE. So 8 weeks till the truck comes to deliver the new and take back the old. Keep us posted on your decision.
:-)  Thanks. Like 1 hour ago, I have just asked Tekton via email about the later-on upgrade of the tweeters. I was also thinking that maybe the  beryllium tweeters  could be too bright for me, but no way of knowing until I try them. I am using a Wyred4Sound ST-500 power amp. My usual budget for gear items is about $1,500 maximum, but if I do not have to use it all, I do not want to, :-).

I was just reaching by asking, any advise or comments from tekton owners is information that I did not have before, hence it helps no matter what.

Thanks for the comments!
Like most of us you probably have a budget. The tweeter upgrade costs almost as much as the speakers. There are some people who like beryllium tweeters and some who don’t. Also ,we don’t know your electronics. Personally ,if my budget permitted I would do the $300 upgrade. I would also ask Tekton if at some point in time if you decide to go for the Beryllium tweeters if they are a direct replacement for the soft domes ie: the tweeters are the same size so no woodwork needs to be done. Also you should ask if you can buy the Be tweeters from them after you have purchased the speakers.
Its hard enough finding people who have personally listened and compared different models. To even begin to answer your question would call for comparing those different upgrades. Which maybe there is someone out there who has, but I don't fancy your odds much.

Even if you find one though guess what? Still can't answer! Because no one can tell you what you should do.

All I can say is, having bought Moabs with the standard upgrades (better wire, caps, terminals) and then heard how good these things are, my only regret is not going for even more. In other words right now you are probably a lot like I was, wondering if even these things are really worth it at all. So maybe upgrades will help to make sure they are. What happened with me was they are so good its obvious no upgrades were necessary to blow away everything else I've heard.

Which only raises more questions- so why if no upgrades are necessary, then why is my only regret not going for even more? Because for me when I find something crazy high value the next step is max it out all I can. But for you it might be more like great then I can spend the money somewhere else.

Everyone's situation is different. Even your situation is different depending on your system development plans. I would just get the most Tekton you can afford right now. Whether that is an upgraded Mini-Lore or another model. Order, relax, enjoy. Don't make it harder than it has to be.
