Now for a great cover-Bobby Bland-Ain't No Sunshine off of his Midnight Run album. Best I've heard.

Joan Osborne: "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted" (fantastic original by Jimmy Ruffin).

Joan Osborne: "Shake Your Hips" (original by Slim Harpo)

Bobby Fuller Four: "Loves Made A Fool Of You" (original by Buddy Holly).

Phil Seymour: "Let Her Dance" (original by The Bobby Fuller Four).

Buddy Miller: "That's How I Got To Memphis" (Original by Tom T. Hall).

Kasey Chambers: "No Time To Cry" (original by Iris Dement).

Mink DeVille: "Cadillac Walk" (original by Moon Martin).

Dave Edmunds: "Let It Be Me" (original by The Everly Brothers). Dave has covered many other songs, often bettering the original.

Thirteenth Floor Elevators' cover of Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue."  One of the two Byrds covers of this also excellent.
This one, originally by the Shirelles in 1961, then Carol King in 1971.

Amy Winehouse - Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?

Maybe the best cover band from the 60s was Vanilla Fudge. Perpetually overlooked and underrated, they worked their covers into entirely new arrangements with extended jams and recurring themes to the extent that they were barely covers anymore. Yes, they were accused of bombastic and hyped up deliveries of "chestnuts", not to mention Mafia connections, but they still managed to make these songs fresh and new.

They did excellent Beatles tunes, including "Eleanor Rigby" and "Ticket to Ride", and gave the Supremes "You Keep Me Hanging On" an entirely new twist.

They are the benchmark of how covers should be done.

"C´mon Everybody" by Humble Pie
"I Wonder" by Humble Pie
"Ghost Riders in the Sky" by Outlaws
"Morning Dew" by Nazareth
"Rope Ladder to the Moon" by COLOSSEUM (Jack Bruce)
"Stormy Monday Blues" by COLOSSEUM
"Runaway" by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
"Delilah" by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
"She´s Not There" by Santana (The Zombies)
"Black Magic Woman" by Santana (Fleetwood Mac)

The Remains! Good one Slaw. I’ve always loved The Beau Brummels’ version of the Don Gibson classic "Oh Lonesome Me", which I much prefer to Neil Youngs odd take on the song. I recently for the first time heard Marshall Crenshaws recording of Dylans "My Back Pages". It is absolutely fantastic, even better than The Byrds version, and that’s really saying something.
Have to cast another vote for Shel. Saw them in Northern Michigan and highly recommend them. The "Battle of Evermore" cover is really outstanding. I also enjoy "Going to California"

Slaw mentions Patricia Barber and while "A Taste of Honey" is one of my favorites, her cover of "Autumn Leaves" is absolutely breathtaking. If you don't want to listen to the whole thing, "Autumn Leaves" starts at the 20:50 mark...

And one last suggestion is unfortunately one that you will never hear but I saw a singer/songwriter out of Northern Minnesota named Andrew Newton who performed what is as far as I'm concerned, THE definitive version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. I thought it was even better than k.d. lang. This guy just got it right! Here is a more recent track from him.

"Every Little Thing" by Yes (Beatles)
"America" by Yes (Paul Simon)

"Spirit in the Sky", "Green River" and many more by David Byron (Avenue)

Many Springsteen songs by Manfred Mann´s Earth Band
"Born to Be Wild" by Blue Öyster Cult

Yeah, great one Slaw. My all-time favorite has gotta be "I hear You Knockin" by Dave Edmunds. The original was by Smiley Lewis, though Fats Domino also did it. Edmunds' guitar solo in his version is absolutely killer---he creates the greatest tension-and-release I've ever heard in music, very sexual.

@toneranger58...THANKS for the heads up on the new johnnyswim album!  I LOVE those guys.  I first saw them on Live From Daryl's House and was blown away.  Very, very talented husband and wife.
Johnnyswim - "Wicked Games" by Chris Isaak's. The new Johnnyswim CD,  Georgica Pond is killer. I can't understand why they are not more famous. Crank this one up if you want to hear how good the Bass is on your system!!!

Shawn Colvin "Guitar Town" on cover girl. All the songs are just great on that CD, but I really love that song, so it has to be the best.
It had been quite a while since I last listened to Richard Thompson's cover of Brittney Spears' hit "Oops, I Did it Again". I almost forgot how great it is. Who knew that there was a real song hiding inside that record.
+1 on the Beatles Tostados, good call. I really like all of their covers on their first four albums. Great selections and very well performed. Just spun the monos last night - terrific stuff.
