Maybe the best cover band from the 60s was Vanilla Fudge. Perpetually overlooked and underrated, they worked their covers into entirely new arrangements with extended jams and recurring themes to the extent that they were barely covers anymore. Yes, they were accused of bombastic and hyped up deliveries of "chestnuts", not to mention Mafia connections, but they still managed to make these songs fresh and new. They did excellent Beatles tunes, including "Eleanor Rigby" and "Ticket to Ride", and gave the Supremes "You Keep Me Hanging On" an entirely new twist. They are the benchmark of how covers should be done. |

The Remains! Good one Slaw. I’ve always loved The Beau Brummels’ version of the Don Gibson classic "Oh Lonesome Me", which I much prefer to Neil Youngs odd take on the song. I recently for the first time heard Marshall Crenshaws recording of Dylans "My Back Pages". It is absolutely fantastic, even better than The Byrds version, and that’s really saying something. |
Have to cast another vote for Shel. Saw them in Northern Michigan and highly recommend them. The "Battle of Evermore" cover is really outstanding. I also enjoy "Going to California" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62L5kn1qFeY Slaw mentions Patricia Barber and while "A Taste of Honey" is one of my favorites, her cover of "Autumn Leaves" is absolutely breathtaking. If you don't want to listen to the whole thing, "Autumn Leaves" starts at the 20:50 mark... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVSV0xu0P8U And one last suggestion is unfortunately one that you will never hear but I saw a singer/songwriter out of Northern Minnesota named Andrew Newton who performed what is as far as I'm concerned, THE definitive version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. I thought it was even better than k.d. lang. This guy just got it right! Here is a more recent track from him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxLPGMgZ70M |
"Come Away Melinda" by Uriah Heep (Hellerman/Minkoff tune) "Every Little Thing" by Yes (Beatles) "America" by Yes (Paul Simon) "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix "Rock and Roll Medley" by Uriah Heep Live (RnR classics) "Spirit in the Sky", "Green River" and many more by David Byron (Avenue) "Keep on Knocking", "Roadrunner" etc by Hurriganes Many Springsteen songs by Manfred Mann´s Earth Band "Born to Be Wild" by Blue Öyster Cult "Theme for an Imaginary Western" by Mountain (Bruce/Brown tune) "Badge" by Royals (Cream tune) ..... |
danoroo 4. "Come On Everybody" (Original by Eddie Cochran covered by Led Zeppelin) Also covered by Humble Pie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5L-YcHcYe4 |
Yeah, great one Slaw. My all-time favorite has gotta be "I hear You Knockin" by Dave Edmunds. The original was by Smiley Lewis, though Fats Domino also did it. Edmunds' guitar solo in his version is absolutely killer---he creates the greatest tension-and-release I've ever heard in music, very sexual. |
