Finally stepping into the hobby after 30 years of watching from the sidelines
About your curtain, John.I don't think that will work for you - the curtain will simply absorb all sound, and may make the room sound dead. In my experience, two under appreciated techniques can work wonders: wall texture is very useful (think bas...
Must speakers have certain volume to sound convincing ?
I suspect it has a lot to do with how much damage your ears have sustained.
My final table , hopefully !
Orpheus, my experience is too limited. I’ve tried to move up a lot with each change, so that I have lived with only a half dozen TT in the last 20 years. Of course, I've auditioned quite a few, but that's not the same at all. Simplifying a bit, I ...

Further to the above, I should have noted that the Trans-Fi is made to order for this kind of test, in that the arm wand carries the cartridge and the azimuth adjustment. VTA and tangentiality settings are obvious. Thus when you change wands, your...

Cottguy, have you considered Atma-Sphere? Their designs have no output transformers. I owned a pair, and found them to be very clear and sweet, and very decorative in a retro way, with their 12 glowing tubes. People would often comment on them, ev...

How does the TT affect the sound? A bit like digital. To my ears, digital sounds dry and harsh compared to analogue. Turntables extend the spectrum towards the natural. Inexpensive and poorly designed TT tend to sound a bit harsh, accentuating each...
Turntable Platter Demagnetizing
Cast iron is actually quite a good platter material, in that it is less resonant than most materials. The trick is to keep it away from the cartridge, with, say, a 1 inch graphite upper platter. Nottingham Analogue does this, and it works very wel...

Hello Eric.Agree that planars integrate into the room. As to subs, not in my experience - but perhaps that is because of my insufficient expertise.

The trouble with Magneplanars is that they are so damned fast and accurate that they leave subs far behind. The combination blurs the sound from C3 on down. Magneplanars alone are better (and cheaper). IMO.I have had good luck driving Magneplanars...

I use the Trans-Fi tonearm, the Terminator (don't blame me, I didn't name it). It's an air bearing tonearm for $1000, and punches far above its weight. I have two of them, for expensive turntables. You might also consider the Trans-Fi turntable, wh...

Frogman, those are very good ideas. I have owned planar speakers since I bought two of the first Magneplanar Tympani 1a speakers, December 1973. Talk about "WOW". Everyone agreed. Everyone. The apex for that kind of speaker, IMO, were the Tympani ...
Dac to remove Digital Glare/ edge
I second larry's suggestion. I have an expensive player, and it sounds just plain ugly compared to my analogue gear. But, with isolation transformers on each channel, it is quite listenable, even enjoyable. The trick is to use isolation transformer...

Trans-Fi Salvation TT with magnetic suspension, 20 lb platter and air bearing tone arm, $3300. New. Beat that.

Cottguy, I would be hesitant to buy without hearing. But that does not mean never.I bought an upscale Nottingham unheard, after hearing the Hyperspace and admiring it. I spoke with Tom (then the owner/designer), and upgraded to the Mentor, and hav...

Hello Inna. Yes, I did try theoretically optimal cabling in two controlled experiments, one for interconnect and one for speakers. By 'theoretically optimal' I mean derived from the solutions to Maxwells' Equations, with special care taken of impe...
