I have somewhat of the same setup in my HT system; with a 50 inch Sony TV in the middle. I have the 1.6 ribbons on the inside, rather than the outer edge of the speakers. Paired with a REL subwoofer, they sound great. I would still think you would want some space between the speaker and the TV though (at least a foot, more might be better). I have mine about 5 feet out from the wall and aprox 18 inches in front of the TV. When I want to listen to music only I put a heavy blanket over my TV set. |
Count me in on a similar setup with 1.6's and gear in the middle. Like Cmo says, you get better results if you can pull the speakers in front of the tv or other gear. Maggies throw a big soundstage and I haven't found having gear in the midle causes big problems. One thing I have found to help noticeably was the addition of a pair of Jon Risch's DIY "rooms lenses" behind the speakers. What a waste of a good speaker. I really have to laugh when I look at the systems posted on the Gon with big ole honking TVs between the speakers. What a joke. Sure it's good for movies, but don't fool yourself into thinking you are hearing music the way it should be. Even if what you propose is an all out HT setup, it's still a waste of a good pair of Maggies.

Oh, I know how good maggies sound. I used to own a pair of 1.6s with heavily modified xovers. But it seems like a waste of ANY good speaker to relegate it to HT duties. I guess it all depends on where your priorities lie. For me, my modest Boston Acoustics/Pioneer/Samsung/Sharp video rig does just fine for movies in a separate room. But when it's time to listen to music, I don't fool myself with thinking it can be a contender.
The bottom line is, if you have to combine a music and HT system together, just realize that there are compromises to be made. They can co-exist, but not to the full advantage of either one.

Speaker placement. Ever heard of it? Put your speakers where they will accurately reproduce a movie soundtrack in relation to your screen and they will not be positioned best for two channel music. And vice versa. No question about it.

So what exactly is the problem with having a TV in between your speakers when listening to 2 channel audio? This may seem like a basic question but I'm curious... Can someone please explain the theory and sonic implications? Or point me to a link that does so...

Ozzy is a bit harsh in his response, but it is true that having the tv between the maggies (any speaker in fact) will negatively impact the sound. I don't watch movies, but have a big screen between my 2.7qr's (wife wanted it) and it the imaging is no where as good as it was without the big screen. The early reflections and blocking of the rear wave compromise the sound. That said, I would rather have my 2.7's than not have them so I live with the compromise (I would love to throw out the TV, but my wife freeks when I mention it, I don't watch TV). |

Yes you can use the 1.6's with a 65" TV in between. Here's the "best" solution that I used... Build a false wall, so you can recess the TV into the wall hence creating a an equal space in between the speakers. Not only does it look great, but the sound is pretty darn good too. If you want to improve the sound further. Have a drape that you can pull across, covering the TV, could be motorized if you would like. |
