TriPlanar Tips
You get red or basic black. No color coordination options at present. :-)It is certainly safer to remove the cart and arm from the table, no argument about that. :-)The trick is to use medium-high heat, aim the gun over the headshell towards the e...
Silver solder--what wattage soldering iron?
Glad you found an iron to get you by, Will. I can offer that if you get accustom to checking your solder joints with a lupe or strong magnifying glass you will teach yourself a lot about how it is working for you.Anyone want to comment on this sta...
TriPlanar Tips
Doug, I've recently added a double thickness of shrink wrap, about 3/8" long, to the finger lift. It is butted up against the headshell end. At the time I added this it did seem to clear up some inner fuzzies. Whether this is due to damping or the...
Silver solder--what wattage soldering iron?
Mingles, that one even looks like a Weller. For that price it would be hard to beat. It would be nice if it had a temp readout, but that would probably drive the cost up. :-) Heck, that would make a great backup iron.Yep, I had one of those Rat Sh...
Silver solder--what wattage soldering iron?
IME, this is somewhat delicate and you need a better iron. I can recommend Weller, with a 1/32 tip about 650-700 degrees F. This kind of tool is what provides that "simple, quick touch" solder.
cable burn-in / system burn-in
No, Dave, you guys just have different systems, goals, preferences, etc. I have tried side-by-side comparisons with the two of the same cable, one cooked, one not. The uncooked always sounded better to me once they had settled in on their own. I d...
cable burn-in / system burn-in
Remind me never to buy cables from some of you guys. ;-)I have yet to find a cable that has been cooked that I did not prefer the sound of the same cable uncooked. IME with cookers, the highs take a hit. But, to each his own.My current thinking on...
Graham Phantom vs Triplaner
Jfrech, it is not just TP owners. I also own a Basis Vector. I do appreciate that part of the reason for all of those connectors is to provide flexibility. However, what if (for people like me) the owner is going to be using the same cartridge on ...
Which phonostage is a heavenly match for a XV-1S
Yes, Lew, those are some good points about a built-in. Here are some good points about why I believe separates can sound better if done properly.1- Power supply modulation of the phono stage by the line stage. 2- keeping the phono section off when...
Graham Phantom vs Triplaner
And the verbal floggings will continue until tonearm morale improves around here. :-)Perhaps when one of you early adapters gets tired of your P2, or the economy bubbles again (ha-ha-ha!), more of us will get a chance at owning one. I would, howev...
Basis Vector Setup-Am I missing anything?
Or! You could watch for a used 1400 or other Basis, mount the Vector on that and you'd be way, way beyond the P9. You could also purchase the additional weights. I don't think they are that expensive.IIRC, Basis uses a slightly larger bore than th...
Graham Phantom vs Triplaner
Hi Andrew, Thanks for the report. Glad you're still with us. :-) I have heard from a few guys I share common audio goals with that the P2 is really good. Hopefully, the opportunity to hear one myself will crop up before too long. I'll have to look...
Record Cleaning Machine RCM
I suppose you guys don't want to hear about my $75, Hoover-based, lazy-susan, home-boy RCM. :-) It is every bit as loud as any commercial RCM. VPI has nothing on my plywood and cork Quasimodo machine. Hell, I even have the pleasure of spinning the...
New vinyl's noisy little secret
Larry,My experiences and memories (those still with me) tell me that I spent a good amount of time taking LPs back to swap for a non-defective copy. That was pretty normal for the shops I remember, and I think it also targeted me as a potential fu...
New vinyl's noisy little secret
I don't know. The releases I'm getting from Music Matters play very nicely. I do, however, clean new vinyl always. Premiere, steam, AIVS.
