Idle hands are a devil's workshop!
I may need to join A'gon Anonymous (AA)
Who else gets excited every single day looking forward to reading the daily "New Today" in the Audiogon listings?
Definitely dangerous as I can attest to first hand, but is a ton of fun with my morning Dunkin donuts iced coffee while stuck working from home. I get a pretty good idea of the used marketplace and can definitely see whats priced to sell and what I know will linger for months cause people are trying to win the lottery with their pricing. And if you just wait it out, what you’re looking for will pop up- I’ve gotten burned on that one before. I’ve also made the mistake of reading after a few too many drinks and then the next day I was like, why did I buy that?
I also love so many of the descriptions -the same adjectives used over and over. And then having to give a reason why you’re selling something that you just said was the greatest thing ever and a final lifetime purchase type of component.

Its the fantasy life. They should make New Today pages you can flip through backwards like the way women flip through their magazines. Or maybe a virtual store where you see something sparkle off in the distance... Ooh!... and run over to check it out. Have a little gif run around putting up the Blue Light Special on cables.... |
I enjoy looking over the offerings, but I never anguish over anything shown. My budget is limited, and most of what I see listed on Audiogon is way above my limit of affordability. But still it’s fun to look and imagine — like perusing the cars on a car lot or car show, knowing I will never own such a vehicle, but it is still fun looking. (Same with fancy women, who I often compare to cars, and some of them have sleek curves and pristine seats that are fun to ogle, but I’m glad to not be in a position to try to keep their attention). |
We need to build systems that please us long-term. I'm not saying don't change anything but only buy pieces you have auditioned a week or more in your system and you know won't need an upgrade for many years. Changing short-term and multiple pieces at once are recipes for unhappiness - and an empty wallet. By all means keep up with the market and look at the eye-candy. Just don't get addicted. |
The Audiophiliac himself was a guest speaker at my AA meeting this morning. https://youtu.be/h-dx9KyW_Jg |
