Not live, but the newest Bill Charlap trio album, "Stardust," with Kenny Washington and Peter Washington, is really excellent and gorgeously recorded.

Thanks Kana. Another very enjoyable one to pick up is Dave Brubeck Quartet "Park Avenue South", on the Telarc label. Dave is accompanied by Bobby Militello - alto sax & flute, Michael moore - bass, Randy Jones - drums.

Fred Hersh Trio, live at the Village Vanguard. Superb.

Ray Brown Trio - Live at Scullers, with Benny Green on piano and I forget who on drums, excellent.

Pat Metheney Trio - Bill Sewart on drums, Larry Grenadier on bass.

I love the earlier Ray Brown Trio with the amazing Gene Harris on piano. The Concord release BAM, BAM, BAM comes to mind as a great live one. That group had a real drive with a foundation in blues and gospel. Considering the age of the CD releases, the LPs are bound to have better fidelity.

the most extra-ordinary live-recorded trio i heard was Dieter Moebius'(Kluster) trio.
Three guys gathered arround the crowd in Koln with no prior preparations with synths and started to improvise. That made me to jump like Michael Jordan from excitement and musicians great possibilities.
I don't remember all of their names but the drummer was from Guru-Guru german band.

You know, it doesn't have to be a piano trio. How about Joe Henderson with Al Foster and Ron Carter? I'm talking about the "Standards" recordings. Very hipological indeed! Oh yeah, and Sonny Rollins had a date like that--was it with Elvin Jones and Bon Crenshaw?

The two Joe Henderson State of the Tenor recordings (love the name!) are perennial favorities of mine. Not great recordings particularly, but great music.

Drubin: Thanks for reminding me of the title; "State of the Tenor." Love Joe's "Friday the 13th!"

Medeski,Martin & Wood- Tonic

KEITH JARRETT TRIO - with Jack DeJohnette and Gary Peacock. The two most recent releases are in the free jazz mold and a bit of a challenge for the listener, but well worth the effort. Other KJT releases from the early 80's to late 90's offer a wonderful assortment of standards and Jarrett-composed pieces that are musical, tuneful, skillful and artful.

My favourites are: Whisper Not, Tokyo '96, Standards in Norway, The Cure, but there are many more to add to my collection.

Bill Evans Trio: Live at Town Hall Vol.1 on Verve. Nice recording, virtuoso performance. don't know if it has been repressed, but there are lots of original pressings of it on the used market. I recently picked this gem up on a trip to the Princeton Record Exchange.

Soulive has just release a new live CD on Blue Note.

Interesting trio- drums, guitar and Hammond B3.

Good CD for rockers trying to get into Jazz.
