Most reputable independent tube equipment repair facilities in the US ?

Not that I need it now but maybe in the future, especially for equipment no longer supported by the manufacturer, some European or Japanese exotics, real vintage etc.

I mean, master level trustworthy technicians.

Do you know anyone ?

Stereo Rehab in Chicago. I was thrilled to find this place...exactly what you seem to be looking for.

 https://stereorehab.wordpress.com/

On the east coast, I’ve had work done at both SoundSmith in Peekskill, and AudioClassics in Binghamton. Both provide excellent service and have the knowledge to tackle projects that others might not touch.

A quick look at Stereo Rehab yields this tidbit:

For reference, Stereo Rehab IS NOT accepting any units for service that are shipped in. Only units that are brought in, assessed and evaluated with the units owner present, auditioned in person by the units owner upon completion, and picked up in person by the units owner are accepted.

Too bad for all of us who don’t live in Chicagoland.

Yeah, no shipping is no go for most of us. Analogique in NYC doesn't do shipping either, by the way.

Prairie Audio does not exist on the web, at least I couldn't find it.

I'll check those places on the East Coast.

I found a guy who works only on tube gear and is mainly into pre-war stuff about a 2 mile drive from my house in Austin. He’s done two jobs for me, crazy fast turn-around, super reasonable, very fastidious. His place is like a museum of antiquarian gear. I consider that a blessing, cause I loathe shipping gear as well.

I did use Bill Thalmann (RIP)-- first class guy.

I think Ben, who used to be at the Stereo Exchange in Manhattan, had a shop in Brooklyn and was authorized for a lot of more modern tube gear but I don’t know if he is still around. Peter L. also did ARC at one time.

I think you just have to dig--@inna- you are in NY metro aren’t you?

Vu Jade Audio in NJ has a terrific reputation. You can talk with one of the owners here on A’Gon. He goes by the name BigKidz.

Bill, yes, I am in Fairfield County, CT, used to be in Westchester County, NY.

I wouldn't mind shipping, some risks, sure. Including shipping to Austin, TX.

wharfy, thank you, the name in NJ sounds familiar, but I've never dealt with them.

I raised my guy, not b/c I thought you should ship to him, but that finding someone in your backyard where you could drive the gear over makes more sense. I used to do that with Lamm--it was a long drive to deep Brooklyn from where I was in the lower Hudson Valley but I felt far more comfortable about transporting the equipment. Lamm uses wooden crates and insists on air freight for a reason. (I know people that palletized some serious cars and flew them across the globe, but tube gear-- yikes- call me paranoid). Yes, I know, original cartons and all that, but still....

I have to ship my dear Nakamichi 682ZX deck to California for service every few years and pray each time I do it. I trust only Willy Hermann with it, and he is over there.

C. Schnieder @ Holt Hill Audio in Mass. I have found no one better to work on my Con Jon & ARC tube amps. You gotta wait a bit cause he's busy, (understandable) but it's well worth it. I'm not a fan of shipping either. Too many hands all over your package, lol. Fortunate to have this tech/shop 30mins from me. Just my opinion

Had a 70 lb Reflection tube amp that was damaged twice in shipping ...

So I would not ship a tube amp ever again..

Our facility is in Northern New Jersey.  We have a sound room set-up there also.  My partner has a Masters degree in electronic design so he is able to repair almost anything we have received when other repair shops cannot.

We also enjoy meeting new people and letting them hear our own products.

Look us up and reach out if you need our assistance.

Peter

Peter,

Thank you.

Just for possible future. Do you also service and calibrate R2R decks or could give a referral ? I might get Otari deck later, not likely Studer.

But for now I only have my VAC Avatar's SE volume control knob making scratching noises. I don't know if it is a wear or just dirt, but I am not going to ship it to VAC for that or even take it to your facilities. It's minor at the moment.

I trust only Willy Hermann with it, and he is over there.

Willy’s the best for Naks. He restored my BX-300 a few years back. Lucky for me lives nearby.

@inna , you could give Mike Garry a call at Hudson Valley HiFi in Cornwall, NY, which is not terribly far from you, just above West Point. He accepts shipments if you don’t want to make the drive. His shop is does warranty work for Luxman, as well as offering repairs and restoration on other brands. Did some excellent work on my MQ-300 after a blown rectifier took out a few resistors. Good guy.

wrm57,

Thank you. I'll keep him in mind.

West Point is not too far from me, right.
