Best place to sell high end audio equipment?
I have a bunch of equipment that I am not using anymore that I am looking to sell and am wondering where everyone posts there stuff? I have throw things up on Craigslist, eBay, US Audio Mart and Audiogon, just wondering what other sites are out there, since im trying to offload this stuff as quick as possible. Equipment includes things like:
McIntosh Amps
McIntosh PreAmps Tube and Digital
McIntosh Speakers
LOTS of AudioQuest Cables

@b_limo When you think about the numbers relative to preowned audio gear...if I list something on Audiogon or a similar site....I'm probably going to get somewhere in the 50-60% of retail price for a less than 10 year old, still in demand, great condition piece. That means that if I sent it to an intermediary...who will then try to resell it at somewhere in the 60-70% of retail range....there is no way they are going to offer me more than 25-30%....and I pay the return shipping to them so I actually net less. I see it as a trade off....lower price for certainty and no post sale hassle...for some people it is worth it....for others, not so much. |
b_limo It appears TMR has black listed me because I haven’t accepted any of their last 10 (or so) low ball offers ... their offers have been insulting and they seem to get pretty upset “wasting” their time when I won’t accept their lowball offer. This is just a business transaction, so I don’t know why you’d consider their offers "insulting." You can simply walk away if you don’t like the offer. I would gladly have accepted 35-40% of the retail price for my mint condition, less than 5 year old equipment.Of course! But that’s retail. TMR has overhead and other costs and will resell your equipment, so they’ll be paying you wholesale. ... I imagine if they keep lowballing enough inquiries it will deservingly effect their business in negative ways ...It doesn’t look like they’re lowballing you. They’re offering you wholesale. |
It appears TMR has black listed me because I haven’t accepted any of their last 10 (or so) low ball offers. I had asked multiple times to break my offers down individually to no avail. I will fill out the form with 3-4 items listed and they will give me one offer; I don’t know what is being offered on what. This may be a tactic in order to offer even less. secondly, their offers have been insulting and they seem to get pretty upset “wasting” their time when I won’t accept their lowball offer. I would gladly have accepted 35-40% of the retail price for my mint condition, less than 5 year old equipment. I had no idea that when they throw out that lowball offer that you can actually negotiate with them like the flea market. Anyhow, I imagine if they keep lowballing enough inquiries it will deservingly effect their business in negative ways. Be careful about how many lowballs you decline from TMR if you don’t want to get black listed! If you’d like to keep selling to them, it’s best to take their insulting offers with a smile and say “Thank You” as well! |
Colin, I recently was considering selling an amplifier to TMR. The individual I dealt with made an insulting offer, justifying it by saying that they would sell the unit for a price far below what they will actually sell it for. In fact, the amplifier is the newest, recently released updated model, and he said TMR would turn around and sell it for what the older model sells for on the resale market. This individual has been mentioned unfavorably recently in another thread. I am guessing that you are dealing with the same individual and I don't think he will do you any favors and he certainly has turned me off to ever buying or selling anything from TMR. |
Rodman99999, I am not trying to solicit someone to buy via the thread to avoid commissions. Paying a commission doesn't bother me at all. Really all I was looking for was some thoughts on how much wiggle room there was with the Music Room. To me, a "lowball" offer could be anything. I know some resellers only offer half of what they are actually willing to pay and I don't want to leave money on the table. It's not about the models I have, its about insight into their willingness to bargain. |
@colinmaken I don't know if that's a good offer, but it's based on supply and demand. They're thinking about how fast they will be able to turn around and sell your gear. That Yamaha 3000 is a very nice amp. You may be able to easily sell it on an auction site, but have trouble selling the other items. Take this into consideration with TMR's offer, plus there's no commission or fees. You could counter offer saying you want $4000. |
"Any thoughts?" You’re clearly looking for a higher bid, sans paying a commission, by listing the items in a forum. Be honest and try an auction, here: https://www.audiogon.com/new_listing/type |
I messaged The Music Room about a couple of pieces. All are mint, have remote and manual but no packaging: Yamaha AS3000 Yamaha CDS3000 Yamaha CDS2100 They offered me $3,800 total ($1,700 for AS3000, $1,300 for cds3000 and $800 for the cds2100). I know lowrider57 said their first offer is usually a lowball but not sure how much room I've got here for negotiation or if I should look elsewhere. Any thoughts? |
sounds about right to me iopscrl. I have been on Agon site since 03’ and have bought and sold a lot pretty much all on Agon.. all for my own habit. Not much these days. The market and Agon has changed quite a bit. I currently have a pair of first iteration of ML Aerius on US Audio for 60 days now and not a single inquiry. I’m not in a hurry to sell as not inclined to want to ship due to fragility of these even though I rate in the top 1% of obsessive packers . Anyone who has bought from me remembers well I’m sure. I just may get it together and put on ebay. |
Well you are posting in an Agon forum..... My experience is Ebay is best for selling quickly, and receiving fair market value. Ebay and Paypal fees are approximately 13%, and can be built into the price. If you list on Craigslist at a price close to Ebay levels, anyone with an ounce of intelligence will automatically tell you about the fees and then expect you to discount by at least the fee total. A few years ago I ran an experiment. I posted a lot of items- cables, accessories, equipment, ranging in value from $50-$2000. I posted on Ebay, Agon, Audio Asylum, US Audio Mart, Head-Fi. Same ad text, prices and pictures on each site. I had 1 sale on Head Fi, 1 Sale on US Audio Mart, and the rest sold on Ebay. I had a lot of question from Agon buyers- mostly nitpicking and technical questions- a few very low ball offers, but no sales. Mac equipment will sell very quickly on Ebay if your description is accurate, and your pictures are large and clear. |
From eBay’s website.... ”Sellers are not allowed to charge eBay buyers an additional fee for using ordinary forms of payment, including credit cards, electronic transfers, and PayPal.” Way back when I started on eBay I innocently tried to seperately charge for Buyers using PayPal. My item was flagged by eBay the same day. When corrected it was straight back online. |
I’ve found many people believe that their equipment is worth a lot but anything they wish to purchase has little value. Somewhere in between is reality. Most used equipment sells for 50% of retail. Exceptions include equipment less than a year old in perfect condition. Maybe 60%. If it’s previous generation—the Mark 3 just came out— then expect 40% unless rare, in super demand, or collectible. Your $10,000 speakers? Maybe $3,500 if lucky. That’s my experience. ________________________ well thats new for me! _____________________________ Rufus MapQuest UpToDate |
riaa_award_collectors_on_facebook; of course it is possible to charge the buyer the paypalfee. You list ypur terms in the advertise and then the seller can accept. He contact you and then on the PayPal invoice you add the fee you have agreed with the buyer.Job done my friend. |
Stay away from EBAY. It will really cost you to sell there. About 13%. Audiogon is OK but their new format makes it difficult for experienced buyers. I have the feeling that Audiogon has lost many of their experienced customers because of their new format. Thus the high end customers may have moved on to other outlets. I have sold many items on Audiogon and the inquiries keep getting more "amateurish" . |

What the hell... Does anyone know how much I can get for a pair of mint Monitor Audio Silver RS8’s in rosewood finish? I am also curious about the price of a PSB Stratus center channel in a black ash finish, also excellent condition. How about KCI Silkworm Plus interconnects? Excellent condition, no smoke/child/pet household. Where should I list a Shunyata high current power cable. Thanks for any help. I inherited all these and just don’t know what to do with them... |
Good items sell fast here, (take lots of photos). I sold 3 sets of cables here last week in a couple of days, (3 separate ads). Had no bites at US Audio. But, I was shocked at how much money was taken in fees for the high-priced cables. That's the tradeoff...a fast sale and high fees or wait and see at the free sites. One place to check is TMR...The Music Room. They buy used and do trades. Very trustworthy. However, when selling the 1st offer will be a lowball. But they do very well with trades. |

U.S. Audio Mart is another(easier/less expensive) option: https://www.usaudiomart.com/ |
