I got to see DCD at Radio City Music Hall on 10/8. Fabulous show in a great venue, and one of only two shows on the tour done with an orchestra. Very different show than the 1998 tour - much more solo Lisa stuff. She can sing the most incredibly difficult vocal parts with no sign of strain - amazing.
This tour is over, but since they sold out everywhere and Brendan and Lisa got through it without killing each other, I'd be surprised if they didn't get out on the road again soon. They're not to be missed.

Mason--
No, and yes--Cocteau Twins played Boston in, I think, November 1990, I believe at the Orpheum. This was the show I saw about a week before or after the Dead Can Dance show.
I did see Galaxie 500 open for Cocteau Twins at the Boston University ice hockey arena --but that was in March 1991. And it was by far the more memorable show of the two--BU had placed thick pads down over the ice (hockey season had yet to end; BU's team is usually good), but even before Galaxie 500 was done playing, my feet were freezing. Of course (as the Galaxie 500 box set liner notes explain), this was the next-to-last show Galaxie 500 ever played. Glad I caught them then! I remember Dean Wareham doing some amazing e-bow guitar during "Hearing Voices."

Message for AM_Dial.. that Cocteau Twins show you saw in 1990, was that the tour with Galaxie 500? I've always been depressed that I didn't catch that tour, I was in Cleveland but they played in Columbus..
Thanks, Mason |
More wonderful Lisa Gerard haunting vocals in her soundtrack for 'Whalerider' - great movie as well! |
Funny to stumble upon this thread here...I used to listen to a lot of the 4AD bands when I was in high school in the 80s, and saw Dead Can Dance play at Berklee in Boston in 1990 (the same month as a Cocteau Twins show I also saw), around the time they were moving from their original, darker sound into more medieval- and classical-influenced territory. It was an interesting show (particularly their cover of Sinead O'Connor's then-hit "I Am Stretched on Your Grave," sung by Brendan rather than Lisa).
Just a minor correction/clarification for those interested: "This Mortal Coil" is not the title of a compilation album, but rather 4AD head honcho Ivo Watts-Russell's band/studio project--really just a loose collective of musicians connected to the 4AD label and other similar labels. Their first release was a 1983 12" titled "Song to the Siren" (a cover of the Tim Buckley song)--members of Cocteau Twins played on this one, but not DCD. "It'll End in Tears" was the LP released in 1984; "Filigree & Shadow" was a double LP released in 1986; and "Blood" was an LP from 1990, I think. After that I lost track with most things 4AD. Note that a lot of TMC's songs are, of course, covers--of Tim Buckley, Big Star (the third album), Colin Newman (formerly of the classic punk band Wire), Talking Heads, Gene Clark, Judy Collins, Van Morrisson, etc.

Hi Albert,
The only experience I have with this label is my purchase of two of the Euro tour CD's and they were both excellent, both as recordings and in thier custom packaging. I can only presume/expect that those standards will be met with the vinyl edition. I'll most definitely pick up two of the NA concerts in CD as well... Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
Gordy |
I can stand the price, particularly since Lisa Gerrard signs each copy but wonder if this live recording will be up to the standards of their previous releases. Any info on that Gordus?
Thank you for the link, I'm a big fan. |
"The Show" has just announced a 180 gm. 3 disc set of the Dead Can Dance North American tour, more info can be found at http://www.dcddiscs.com/vinyl/ . It's limited to 300 sets,I believe...
All the best! |
I am going to see them at the Hollywood Bowl this sunday night!!!! (9/25). This is their first tour since "breaking up" and I was lucky enough to see them just before they broke up 9 years ago...
I will fill you in next week....I have ALWAYS been a big fan....

Azjake, there is one of each on eBay. |
hey guys and gals, is there anyone out there with a nm "spiritchaser" and "into the labrynth" for sale? have been trying to find these lp's for awhile and no luck! sorry to take a moment sideways on this thread but help is appreciated.

Dead Can Dance is doing a small north american tour in the major cities this fall after touring europe this spring/summer after a six year break to pursue other projects. The NYC show is my closest but i'm not going to be there then so i'm seeing the Auditorium Theater show in chicago on the 12th. I can hardly wait! |
October 8, in Radio City Music Hall NYC. Don't Miss! |
Thank you for the link Richingoth! I've mine ordered... |
Jax2, I already had 'El Cant de la Sibyl', but it is the 'wrong' version. So I've ordered the one on Alia Vox.
Talk about synchronicity--just as I was reading this thread, I was listening to Sibyl...wrong version though it may be, it is haunting indeed. |
Here's another Dead Can Dance tribute CD that was released Sept.05,2005 on Projekt Records titled "Summoning of the muse ~ a tribute to Dead Can Dance" Song samples and reviews |
I've bought no less than 6 new CD's as a result of this thread. All of them good. One of them I picked up is my favorite of the bunch - it's Lisa Gerrard and Patrick Cassidy: "Immortal Memory". I picked it up somewhat accidentally while surfing Amazon.com. I spotted the title, and connected it to to the discussion here of "Immortal Coil". I had only a vague recollection at the time, obviously.
If anyone is inteested in another Lisa Gerrard piece - this one is great. It's on the mellow side, and beautiful vocals. |
Live 2 cd sets of DCD's 2005 Euro tour can be found here... http://www.dcddiscs.com/ |
Fishboat: recently picked up a copy of "Into the Labyrinth"....wonderful CD. While listening to the last cut (sorry, last track)on the CD my mind sort of wandered a bit & I thought I was listening to Jim Morrison for a moment. There are hints of the Paul Winter Consort(Common Ground) in this CD also.
Funny, I hear Jim Morrison and Paul Winter too. Very often I hear something in the music that reminds me of another group or tune and people I am with either understand or they don't. My son who I love more than anyone else on this earth, can never pick up these traits. When I tell him what I'm hearing and name the two groups he either stares at me blankly or tells me I'm wrong. Thanks for reminding me of the parallel in Dead Can Dance. |

I also picked up a copy of "El Cant De La Sibil-La". As was mentioned earlier it's a bit hard to find, but I think I found the right source. Very Nice!
Keep 'em coming folks! |
Love that disc. Above average vocal sonics, but the best part is that, to me, it sounds like Sinatra coming down off an LSD trip. |
Also highly recommended, from Australia, is Trial Of The Bow. Both Ornamentation (1994) and Rite Of Passage (1997) are still available I believe... |
Jocelyn Pook-Untold Things. You should check this out next. She composed the music used in the Masked Ball scene of Eyes Wide Shut. |
Absolutely on the Baraka soundtrack, and the film itself! Just wonderful! My extra copy of Lotus Eaters has sold (thanks Rich), so please no more emails.
Marco |
Got Dead Can Dance's Spirit Chaser. Love it. I ordered two by mistake. Any takers for the other? |
Ralph, I have not found The Eden on vinyl, if you see a copy let me know.
I did get confirmation that Steve Tibbetts, "Big Map Idea" was shipped. When I see it, I will shoot it off to you.
Wish you could have been here tonight. One new member just bought Atma-Sphere amps and preamp and he is positively glowing over it.
We listened to open reel tape most of the night except for a break for LP of Schubert "Trout" (speaker corner release) and Bjork's new double LP which is 45 RPM !
Ella Fitzgerald and Dave Brubeck on open reel is awesome. |
Ralph, Great call on the Baraka soundtrack. It is my no. 1 desert island film, followed by Blade Runner. Another soundtrack very much in this vein by Vangelis. |
Hey Albert, did you ever find any vinyl by the Eden, a group from Australia? They did two albums I've been able to find that sound very much like early DCD, although more on the ambient side, including harmonic singing. I like the 2nd LP the best.
A track from Serpent's Egg showed up on the Baraka soundtrack, which has some other material in the same genre. Lots of fun. |
For you Dead Can Dance fans, and those who may be interested in an interesting introduction, I have a brand spanking new copy of Lotus Eaters still in shrink wrap (already mentioned on this thread). I have a dublicate copy and this one was gifted to me. $14 + shipping of your choice. Ping me off the thread if interested. This is a double album compilation with various artists. Go to the link for further info. Marco |
got it. now that's a voice I can listen to for a long while.. thanks, anyway.. Mortal Coil went fast on the 'gon. |
Try Loreena McKennitt: (the book of secrets) is a good one.
Dave |
Albert, it's the nature of the beast. I have a large and varied music pallid, but, hey, there are just some things that don't do it for me. I'm not into synthesized music as a rule, and overly recorded (I don't know what else to call it) voices become quite fatiguing after a short listen. Man, did Ella sound soooo good after Mortal Coil. and intimate....thanks again. peace, warren |
Sorry Warren, the danger of suggesting music to people we cannot listen with.
You probably won't like Cocteau Twins either, they have more tracks on the "This Mortal Coil" album than Lisa Gerard .
So, my suggestion would be to listen before considering any other 4AD artists. Obviously Lisa Gerard and "Dead Can Dance" is the most accessible of the 4AD artist, otherwise they would not have shown up in Audiogon forums.
Must say though, I still like Cocteau Twins very much and enjoy "This Mortal Coil" as it is an introduction to the history and sound of these artists, long before they became famous. |
anybody for a used Mortal Coil? $10 with shipping. Not my cup of java. Not even close. I'll save the critique. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I gave it two listens. I would have canned it on the first, but I'm trying to be teachable. peace, warren |
Those of you who are fans of Cocteau Twins ( or more precisely Liz Fraser's mesmorising voice) and Lisa Gerard of DCD should also check out the 4AD label 'Song to the Siren' 12 inch EP and 'Lonely as an Eyesore' LP which has a couple of haunting tracks unreleased on their own albums.
Liz Fraser has also done some tracks with Massive Attacks album 'Mezzanine' and an album with FSOL 'Lifeforms' |
looks like they are touring details at http://www.deadcandance.com/

Glad you guys liked the recommendation. Warren, good thing there wasn't too much of her as you may have run short on tissues. For more of Figueras, albeit not quite as dynamic a collection of work, there is a wonderful collection of lullabies she's done. It's also under Alia Vox label (owned by Jordi Savall & Figueras BTW), and is titled "Ninna Nanna". It's a lovely collection of lullabies throughout the ages. Much more low key than Sibil-La, but that same stunning voice, and also the attention to recording detail that Alia Vox is known for. There are many stunning recordings on this label if you enjoy early music. Savall's own recordings are brilliant (viola da gamba mostly)! His playing is breathtaking (pun intended - you will know what I mean if you hear one).
Marco |
Rja-Spot on attitude; your comment reminds me of the occasionally mentioned quote on Sirius classical "reminding you that all music was once new". Marco-I took the El Cant recommendation as well. Spinning non-stop. |
Marco, I'm still crying. Too bad Figueras doesn't sing enough for me. Great recommendation. Next listening, after dinner, Albert's (others as well) Mortal Coil. What else are to do in a blizzard? Oh, a good fire, and better woman. thanks again...peace, warren |
This Mortal Coil-Filligree and Shawdows
This Mortal Coil-Blood
Lonely Is A Eyesore
Dead Can Dance-A Passage In Time
Lisa Gerrard-The Mirror Pool

Albert: Thanks for the good DCD history and the heads-up on "This Mortal Coil, It'll End In Tears". I always enjoy your posts!
I have several of DCD's CD's, and enjoy them very much, but after recently jumping back into the wonderful world of vinyl, the little silver disc's are gathering dust.
Consequently, for the last 2-3 months I've been on a LP vinyl buying spree of major proportions, adding to the record collection I had mothballed over two decades ago.
In any case I found a copy of "This Mortal Coil, It'll End In Tears" on MusicStack.com for a reasonable price. BTW, if anyone else is interested, a copy from another highly rated seller was available the last time I looked. In fact, since both copies were within a few cents of each other and the sellers were similarly rated, I had a hard time choosing, and ended up buying from the gentleman closest to me (adjacent state). |
And here is another tribute to DCD, a 2 cd package from Greece on Black Lotus Records, from the Projekt Store titled 'The Lotus Eaters'. Enjoy! |
Hey Albert, have you checked out the Dead Can Dance tribute album, "The Carnival Within"? It has some very nice moments. It's on Cleopatra Records (CLP 0131) and came out in 1998. |
I'm on it. Thanks again, Albert... |
Hey, what's wrong with someone discovering something they've never heard before? Even if it's 20 years old or 200 for that matter. No matter who you are, there's something out there you haven't heard. I don't think it's reason to criticise someone. Let's try to be more open minded! |
Warren. First would be This Mortal Coil, "It'll End In Tears" as mentioned in my first post. Next would be Cocteau Twins where the voices are mysteriously intertwined and very melodic set to off beat timing and phasing. I have half dozen from this group but unfortunately the best songs and sound are equally scattered, making a definitive suggestion difficult. Next is Richenel, the material I own is sung in French (which I don't understand). Although I cannot follow the lyrics, the album is very beautiful. My favorite from Richenel is "L'esclave Endormi", which I believe means "The Sleeping Slave." My version is LP and pressed at 45 RPM with stunningly dynamic bass and soaring vocal, making it a joy to listen to. Richenel may be difficult to find, particularly the 45RPM version. This artist switched record labels shortly after he released this one with 4AD. Next choice would be Clan of Xymox which is a distant third from "Dead Can Dance," and "This Mortal Coil," but still a very interesting piece and cannot be mistaken for typical FM radio play. Here is a link to the Rolling Stone review of "This Mortal Coil." Appears you can download a sample and determine if worth seeking out. This may not suit every taste, I am extremely diverse in my in music choices and why I hesitate to make suggestions. http://www.rollingstone.com/reviews/album/_/id/241644/thismortalcoil?pageid=rs.Artistcage&pageregion=triple1 |
I totally agree with Synthfreak. Been listening to them and purchased everthing when new since 1984. Listening to NYU-FM in NYC I guess had it privileges to lots of my type of music. Even my post last January (2004) when her latest solo cd 'Immortal Memory' came out I picked this as one of my top 3 cd of the year, and it still is.
Regards, Rich |
Albert, on your list you've starred recordings you have. If you could only keep one, which would it be? I'll start with that. Alright, you can make it two. thanks again. warren |
For a medieval, acoustic antecedent you could check for online store samples of eponymous "Acantus." It's been awhile since I've listened to that one, but it makes for an interesting reference point. |
