Mogami - Quad 12 ga. in the house!

Found an excellent (i.e.. inexpensive) source for Mogami's 3104 speaker cable.  It's arranged as a quad 12 gauge cable, so you could bi-wire or combine to make a 9 gauge cable.

Less than $7 /foot from Markertek.  More expensive from Parts Express.

More when the pants show up.

Interesting.  What cables are you gonna compare them to?  That’s really the key parameter for a meaningful evaluation. .

Hey @soix

My old zip cord. Honestly not expecting a lot, this is just a little house keeping.

Interesting.   I am about to buy an entire 500 foot reel of Belden 1313a 10 gauge to run about 200 feet of speaker cable for home theater.  I thought this was the best cable at the price range.  Anyone ever compare the Belden with the Mogami?

anyone need 300 feet of Belden in white jacket?

Yeah, for home theater and with that length go with whatever is cheaper.  Honestly, you’re watching movies more than listening to audio in a HT system so you’re not gonna care about whatever little differences there is in cable differences for audio.  For 2-channel, yes.  For purely HT, I think you’re wasting money on cables.  Just my $0.02 FWIW.

Actually, I hear things a bit differently.  To me the Canare speaker cables really outshined the Belden, but these were Blue Jean series cables.  Each manufacturer has many lines, so not a universal thing.

Performance Audio has Mogami 3104 for 5.11 per ft.

I bi-wire with it. Very neutral and high quality.

I recently (the past month+) attempted to purchase Canare 411S from Performance Audio and their "purchase" function did not work (for me) on their website.

I sent them an email regarding such, but did not receive a reply.

I then purchased the same cable online from Markertek and had the product in hand within 7 days (ground delivery) even though they were being hammered by extremely bad weather @ the time.

Not a big purchase (just 50'), but still.

Thanks for the tip, Erik.  Agree with the 'housekeeping' aspect for sure... ;)

Anytime one can minimize the cable count lower is always a +.

My Markertech box showed up yesterday.
It was maybe 7 months, but some odd Neutrik connectors were likely the delay reason.

It is likely around my 5th order from them.

I have gotten such a knee jerk responses, when people see the current zip cord in the avatar, that I almost hate to change them out.

The Mogami interconnect wire is also worth a mention, and the Neutrik ProFi RCAs and the Neutrik XLRs…

I've never had any issues purchasing cable and connectors from Performance Audio. Better pricing on the same products, shipped to East Coast within a week. Spend 2 dollars more per foot at your vendor of choice.....makes cents to me.

Yeah performance has worked for me...mogami was one of first diy speaker cable efforts...You must cut this wire after initial length cut...strands dont survive stripping.Fwiw.

(for anybody interested..3103,3104 in 7ft lengths)?

digs:

I ended up using my basic Miller 100 stripper for Canare 4S11.

Borrowed a multiple hole stripper (somehow that just doesn't sound right) from neighbor, but it was too long cumbersome to maintain a 90 degree angle when pulling/pushing off the PVC jacket (lost many strands).

The compact Miller worked well, though I had to don leather work gloves as the jacket is difficult to remove.

Out of 16 strips I only lost a couple of strands (not a big deal).

I was going to keep this simple... but it isn't.

First, my cable is too thick for basic pants.  So need more / bigger heat shrink.

Decided to go ahead and add a PET jacket. Well, my solder gun / heat knife got thrown away a couple of moves ago.  Considering this may be the last time I ever put together speaker cables it's really getting expensive. 😁

Erik:

What are the "pants" you refer to?

After my stripper post, that's as far as this/my query goes on the matter.

I found stripping the Canare painful/tedious, but I have mild arthritis in a few finger joints.

Ordered the copper spades you suggested, so will have to go through the process again as the binding posts mucked up the wire /copper strands.

Looks like I may need to rough up/mat out the finish on the spades (per reviews being that they are too slick), but figure that if really needed I'll just lightly clamp them (mini vise) with medium particulate sand paper.

I didn't want to "pop" for your Mogami cable as the Canare may only end up in two Sharp based mini systems, but I would have popped for Canare 4S11G (if I could have found it for sale in the USA).

Hey @DeKay,

Cable "pants" are specialized heat shrink, which make the transition from the outer cable jacket to the individual + and - conductors more tidy. Sometimes instead of heat shrink they are are little barrels with 1 in and 2 or 4 out. They can look pretty fancy but are also pretty heavy.

The kind I ordered fit OK on the jacket, but the legs were too small for the dual 12 gauge conductors that needed to fit each.

PS - Parts Express has the 2 conductor Mogami 3103 per foot.

Dekay...the stripping of mogami is tough because the smaller/finer conductors.cutting/slice length/horizontal spares them some what....yeah i looked at 4s11g.Even called canare us supplier (Sell 500’) of it..The only one that would sell cut length is in europe/ebay $$.Worked out to be $73.00?...3 m pair.If this your cable than still pretty cheap.

Eric the shrinkwrap looks better than those pvc pants...lol.

@digsmithd I think it depends on how you accessorize, but my cables are going to be like cartoon pigs.  No pants!

Oh the visual 🐷...each to there own brother...got to have me sum panths! ✌

Sorry, WBT, but I am not buying your $140 gold plated crimping tool when I can get one from Harbor Freight for << cleans glasses >> $16.99
