Why is it that every time, lately, that I'm interested in a thread...

... a couple days later it gets removed by the moderators? How bad can a thread be to deserve being REMOVED?

I may have missed something but... I'm confused!

rolox

It's because nearly any mention of politics in connection with subject matters triggers someone who says something ridiculous and then there's a food fight and then the thread is shut down.

Here's a template:

These speakers are good.

They're made in China.

China policy was wrecked by X party.

No, China was wrecked by Y party.

At least X party didn't do A, B, C.

You're only saying that because you're a moron.

THREAD DELETED.

yeah often times what hilde45 stated happens.

I would like to add the following additional reason.

Thread topic and question clearly stated:

Original poster

"I am looking for a new CD player in the $1000 range. I have narrowed down my choices to two players, the yankee and zebra. Does anybody have any experience with these players?"

Response 1 "Yeah I have had the Yankee and it’s a great spinner, and you can connect an external DAC to improve the sound."

Response 2 " Have you tried the alpha, it’s a great CD player"

Response 3 " I have the delta deluxe and I would get that one. It’s about $10,000 but you can get it used"

Response 4 " I would suggest the Bravo model dealer, It’s the best one we carry at our store. I can get you a deal for $15,000.00. It will trounce any other CD player".

Response 5 " Turntables are better than CD players. You are in incompetent moron for wanting something digital. And your mother wears combat boots".

Original poster, " All I want is a budget CD player, not trying to start a war, but you guys s**k".

Post and eventually the thread gets deleted somewhere down the line.

@2psyop Nice! I think we have a creative new genre, here: The Ways Audiogon Threads Go Wrong. Or, Threads Gone Wild.

Here's another iteration (from a while back but still in living memory):

OP: I'm looking to get some isolation for some components in my system. Where is the best place to start?

"Isolation is snake oil. Better to spend on a new turntable."
"I like Herbies footers. They really solved my issues."
Then, an old hand steps in:
"You all are whistling in the dark. You need to learn to LISTEN. To really pay attention. Here are some photos [inserts link of his system for the 1000th' time] of what a real Einstein can do. Oh, and by the way, you need to get Townshend podiums, Tekton speakers, and Raven Audio tube amps."
"Shill! Shill! Shill!"

Thread deleted.

Post removed

Honestly, politics should not come into any discussion of audio equipment. Lest you be tone- deaf on either left or right ear

@antigrunge2

Honestly, politics should not come into any discussion of audio equipment.

I agree with this, but I'm curious to hear your reasons as to why this is true.

Does the speaker on the left sound better or the speaker on the right? No they both are corrupt. It’s the shadow DAC that runs everything.

The rising incidents of "Thread Removed By Moderator" has also become a huge annoyance to me regarding Audiogon's discussion forum.  With each passing week, it appears more and more to me that Audiogon has relocated to Pyongyang.

@rolox  Can you send us specific examples to support@audiogon.com?

Someone who gets it finally!!

Ya gotta admit MC was lots of fun!

I liked the "vibration" thread, where even the tree roots would vibrate.  Ah, the gool ole days......

"Why is it that every time, lately, that I'm interested in a thread..."

Lately?

There is also the one that goes:

"In my experience with brand X, it  is a very good amp/speaker/cartridge, but might be a better match with Y then Z."

"What? You're an idiot! You're dumb, stupid and ignorant. X sounds great with everything! X is the best thing ever!"

I've learned not to say anything about brand X in a public post.

I'd be interested if any of you get a pop up saying "This page is not responding" often when on the forum?  My Internet is reasonably fast (Spectrum) and I don't have issues with other sites? I am using Edge, not Chrome.  Does this happen to you and you have to wait maybe a full minute for the pages to finish loading sometimes?  Thanks.

As far as politics...well, some on here ASK for it, when posting things like "What are people down on gear from the PRC?"  I mean, that is a loaded question that is bound to bring up a discussion of politics, if not warranty fulfillment issues.

Maybe instead of deleting discussions wherein some useful information might be contained, it would be better if the moderators would more strictly weed out such open posts in the first place.

@2psyop

It's almost as if people can't read or feel so compelled to post their input that they do so despite it having nothing to do with the op. As for this op, I must not spend enough time here because I haven't noticed threads being removed.

I just got a thread deleted! It was on someone who likes to post about speakers but I dare not say their name lest it doom this thread to extinction.

@hilde45 😆

I warned you on the second post of the thread in question to be careful or you may stir the wrath of “      “ (I dare not say the name).

The mods are volunteers that have actual lives outside of this forum. They don't have time to babysit every thread. I'm a mod on another forum which thankfully isn't as busy as this one so we try to step in and encourage members to argue via private message so save the thread from getting shut down. It's too time consuming to pick through deleting insults and retorts.

The Shadow Dac comment was great @2psyop

There was an opening on the Tekton assembly line bubble gum, rivet, and glueing section.

Cheers

Too many Snowflakes getting their little feelings hurt, so their first reaction is to CANCEL, CENSOR, DELETE! Quick, run away make the bad man go away.

Rubbish posts need deletion, especially rude and offensive ones.

But why delete the whole thread?

Suggests the moderators are too lazy to read each post.

It's just as easy to be helpful or skip a topic if one feels compelled to be nasty or have fun stroking one's own ego by saying something against forum etiquette and rules. The problems rests with good judgment and not choosing to be a complete donkey arse. IMHO

Country of origin and support should come into almost all audio equipment discussions unless every buyer doesn’t mind waiting months to send/receive back replacement units/parts/tech support in their native language if something goes wrong. Not just time but shipping costs, reliability concerns, etc. as well. If you are not embarrassed to say the unit was made in USA, Canada, Europe, why should it be a bad word if you say it was made in China? Junk or not. If audio was made in USA using slave labor I wouldn’t buy it either and I would tell everyone I know that slaves are working on the assembly line, making Slaveware. It’s politicians that have made "politics" a bad word, not Audiogon posters, although some go over the top once in awhile.

I say leave ALL posts and threads up. Each morning I see all these deleted posts and wonder what they were. They are just words people and everyone here is of age to ignore whatever offends them. Geez

Yep.  Someone introduces a topic and the next thing you know it's seen more threads than an antique Singer sewing machine.

Topic: "I Woke Up This Morning and Notced the Walls are Perpendicular to the Floor in My Listening Room"

Us:

Front mounted water-cooled V8s are superior to rear mounted opposed piston 6-cylinder vehicles

Car audio woofers handle more power than "high end" subs designed for the home

A measure of pragmatic nationalism is not a bad thing when considering multinational components

Room treatments.  Room treatments.  And, more room treatments.

Non-parellel walls are overrated. You can fix it with room correction.

Conclusion:

This is what we do. "You can't blame a compass for pointing north"

fertguy:

MC came back for a little over 2 weeks in late Oct/early Nov, 2022 and then disappeared again.

He's currently listed as suspended.

Thanks: Good topic, and entertaining posts, particularly the creative examples. Gotta love room correction.

But why delete the whole thread?

Sad, if that's what's happening.

I think enough people complained about MC rising from the dead that he was sent back to purgatory.

MC committed the worst sin possible on Agon. The sinister act of sharing contact info! As a longtime Agoner nothing upsets me more about this site or “community” than not allowing members to share contact info. Yes, I understand why Agon is policing this, but it does make this site far less appealing and useful for me. Just my opinion and feeling.

Yes, Agon is free to implement policies for protecting the profitability of their site. In my opinion they have simply gone too far, not necessarily with MC, but in general.

Re: the ADMIN post, I wonder how one gives examples of posts that aren't there.  Just curious.

Well, last time I checked it was a post about recommandations for a DAC under 1000$ with sufficient connectics. Nothing borderline. I posted my own recommandations, and a few hours later when I came back to check the post it had been deleted. Happened in similar fashion to a couple other posts I was following lately.

His infractions were numerous and not exclusive to that...

That certainly could have been the final infraction that got him his second (permanent?) suspension.

I agree and especially agree with Hilde45. Since we can't read people's minds I prefer to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and not assume covert bad intent.  Recently I mentioned in a comment (a country that maybe we can't mention) and YEP you can guess it. Part of my comments even mentioned that, perhaps "that" country may just be producing the best engineers to implement some of the new hardware and chips used in DACs. Surprise, the thread was removed.  I was just posing the question of why certain DAC's measured so well.  I didn't sense any responses that warranted taking it down  Maybe there were other reasons.  If AudioGone is listening I hope that's not why it got "removed".

"Does the speaker on the left sound better or the speaker on the right? No they both are corrupt. It’s the shadow DAC that runs everything."

Absolutely brilliant.  +whatever your next MegaMill number may be; random, of course*

You may have very early AM visitors that will compel you to come with them.  The bag over the head is the most entertaining part.... ;)

Mho, everything is open to deletion....even good-natured 'commentary gone BAD" for some overstep of a line unseen.

I like this thread, but now I'mm away....*G*

My guess as to why Admin removes a thread is as follows:

(a) they don't have much time to do this (unpaid? low paid?) difficult job.

(b) they base most of their decision on whether another member complains

(c) given the size and sensitivity of many members, it's not long until someone complains, no matter what severity there is in the thread.

That's what leads to deletion.
