I think it’s time I move on from my DIs, I really like how they sound but they are just too big and opposing for my room. Would be interested in something front ported as I have a room that is wide but not deep (speakers are 8 ft away from listening position and only 1 ft from back wall).
Was thinking Cornwall IV maybe or something from Salk but those might not be an upgrade from the DI.
Up to $5k budget and prefer used. Powered by Line Magnetic LM805i
And please don’t come here just to talk crap about Tekton……….
Do you know how big Cornwalls are? They aren't as tall but they'll take up more floor space than the Tektons.
If you got corners used KHorns are the ticket. They are big but tucked out of the way and don't use actual living space and the best sound per dollar on the used market out there.
Which Salks are you looking at? I am looking at the Salk Song Towers for more than one reason but the fact that they work well closer to the wall keeps them in the conversation for me. Will be watching this thread to see where it goes. Enjoy the music.
I’ve heard the Salk Song3 BeATs and Tekton DIs back to back at an event. I thought the Salks were more refined and would have taken them over the Tektons.
This form would be so much more enjoyable for me if everyone provided links. If you’d really like to help out a company by recommending them, you could do them a real solid by exerting that little bit extra. It’s much easier for a person that is already familiar with a product. By the time I get to the second, third or fourth recommendation, I’ve had to wade through so much to get to the meat and potatoes, I get distracted by something else and never get back to the list.
I have Tekton Lores. The DIs are supposed to be much better I understand but still thought I would offer that I recently returned to my Theil 1.5s that I replaced with the Lores 6 years ago. For me one is not better than the other just different. The Lores, in my large room with a vaulted ceiling, sound like I'm listening to live music in a small club, which I love at times. The Theils sound like I might be in a quiet acoustically perfect recording studio. Tekton is lively and in your face with big soundstage and Theil are more refined, lower soundstage but far better midrange, so smooth and pleasing on the ears. For me midrange sweetness is most important. Maybe my ears are extra sensitive but I was recently at a Joe Bonamossa show sitting near the mixing board and I suggested to the guy controlling the board that there is too much midrange. He nodded and shrugged his shoulders as if he agreed but couldn't do anything more about it. It didn't take away from the show, Joe can play like nobody's business!
A lot of good it did the OP to ask the Tekton bashers to hold their tongues. They are just like window lickers, they can’t help themselves.
To stay on topic, I think you are going down the right path to consider the CW IV. That is if you can sit far enough away. And they sound good tucked into corners or out into the room a little.
I thought the Tekton Moab was remarkable for the money but ended up returning my pair.
If you can stretch your budget just a.bit I’ve got a pair of Tune Audio Marvels for sale here that are absolutely fantastic and are designed to work well near the wall.
tje Marvel is tall but narrow, beautifully veneered, and aesthetically lovely. They don’t pay to be reviewed and so they are a hidden gem! 😎.
I was going to suggest Ohm speakers as well until I looked at your amps spec’s. The Ohm 2000 is like 88db and the 3000 is 85db, I think. Not sure if you said this already, but How big is your room? Your on the right track with the Klispch Classic speakers. They really sound good with tubes!
Ohms similar to Fritz are not rated high efficiency but they are relatively easy to drive. That makes a big difference. But you do have to consider amp power and speaker efficiency if you plan to go loud well. It all depends. Just do the homework and decide what to try. Only then do you know for sure.
Klipsch Heritage are high efficiency but not the easiest load. Result may be more power than expected needed there as well but probably less so with larger models. You can’t make a full range speaker small and expect to run them with few watts well. However you can make smaller speakers easier to drive which helps.
It all depends on what works for you best in terms of speaker form factor, sound, and performance I always recommend best to start with the right speakers and go from there. Especially these days with so many choices for high performance amplification without breaking the bank.
Powered subs integrated well are another very practical approach for delivering top notch full range sound when form factor of speakers otherwise is an issue.
I do own Tektons the ps 12 and the impact monitors, I both like them.Lately while iam playing music to my Andra that has graphite on them, cabinets are excellent, no distortions or ping sound that is originating from the cabinets. The quietness added to the musical satisfaction. Back to Tektons I would hope their cabinets will be built better though the price probably will go up. So If I will get rid of my Tektons , I will try magico between $6k to 7k budget used.
I’m not a fan of how Tektons look but they do have a solid following here. Which leads me to believe that they just might not be right for your room. Take a good look at your room and be realistic about what’s going to sound good in it.
Having said that, I had the Songtowers and they were amazing in my last home and less so in my current room in my new home. The Tannoy I have now are better but are 4x the price. But they aren’t as good as the Salks were in my old room.
I believe the Song 3 line is a big step up from the Songtowers. It was on my short list before I got Tannoy. I think Salks generally are easy to place. I could place the Songtowers right up against the wall and they sounded great.
You will never fall out of love with the Salk finish quality...just amazing. They are all just tried and true proven designs and you have some flexibility in the spec of the finish, crossover components and drivers.
Talk to Jim Salk...I think you will be impressed with the Song 3 BeAT
I can just recommend you to buy the Cornwall IV and never look back. It's a terrific speaker, I've been owning a pair for 6 months and I still think at that price it's hard to find anything better, at least I couldn't. They are engaging and refined at the same time and work great even with 3 watts. Don't know if it's possible to find a speaker which does so many things so good and need just a $1000 amplifier like a Decware just to name one. Really think Klipsch did a phenomal work here. Plus in my opinion they look just beautiful, for sure much more than th Tekton DI's.
“ Hey!!!! There he is, Mr. Insecure had to say something!“
Oh Dear … Insecure , really! The mere fact that I openly express a forthright opinion on these average PA speakers would suggest entirely the opposite would it not? You on the other hand are bailing out of your much beloved PA brand and are seeking advice on where to go next … who is insecure here ?
