Why is Audiogon insisting on a verified physical address in order to post?

Quick question

I just had to enter a verified address into my profile in order to continue posting here.

Does anyone know why that took place?   I don't really love posting my physical address on user groups like this.

Did anyone else have to do this?
Thanks

I haven't been asked to do that yet, but one reason might be to prevent serial troublemakers from rejoining under a different name after being banned.

@mc1969 "You will be" what?

I get that there is phishing here, but does requiring personal phone and physical address data to be inputted in a profile on a potentially insecure website solve the issue?  Just feels transgressive to me and I'm annoyed that I had to do it.

Why not simply fill out a help ticket and get the answer to your question directly from Audiogon; otherwise all you will be getting here is possibly speculative

It helps the Government to know everything we do......so the Government can help us.....Don't be a complainer.  What are you doing this very instant please Sir?

I've been a member long enough to forget that I provided my complete address and  phone number. Common practice for some sites. No biggie. All I did was to go back to make sure the info was correct, click "update" and Bob's your uncle.

For those paranoid about the gubermant prying into your private affairs, get real. Your private info has already been bought and traded by many companies and corporations already.

I'm old enough to remember when sharing your private info required you signing a release (it was illegal to do so) and decades ago they reversed that, making you sign a document saying not to. Most companies never inform their clients and customers of data breaches save for the ones who truly care about their well being. Been that way, again, for decades.

What A'gon is doing is their best to keep the malcontents with bad intentions out. Nothing more. Trolls and scammers need to work in the shadows, avoiding sunshine and providing your address can be verified, defeating their desires, or at least make it harder for them.

All the best,
Nonoise

@larryi best to ask Audiogon that but my assumption is this site exists primarily to provide users the service of buying and selling things.   You have to have to provide  a valid address for that in order to avoid fraudulent or incorrect addresses that would cause issues completing transactions smoothly.   The forum is just an adjunct service.    If this were just a forum and no financial transactions involving shipping addresses were involved there would be no need to provide a valid address.  Furthermore the forums could be used to facilitate address fraud which is a real thing. Just look it up. You can’t join Audiogon just for the forum as far as I know. So you must provide an address and the address needs to be verified.

Hope that helps.

It took me 4 days to figure out "how" to verify a phone # and start posting again.

I have 2 land lines that the system would not accept, but finally tried a $20 burner phone (carry it for emergency calls) and it worked.

I was unable to contact A’Gon support through the system during this time, but did leave a message via the "report post" feature.

I don’t have a problem listing a burner phone that’s rarely used/powered up, but might feel differently if I had a real cell phone full of confidential data.

Not a computer person.

@dekay : I have been trying to get back on here for several days. I contacted support a few times. No response. So I went back to the verification page and added my street address. Well that worked! Five minutes ago I added that cynical post above and it worked! Now let's see if I can add another post.

Verification will keep the bad actors and bots away. Previously they have been getting onto this forum - "Buy counterfeit money online" ...

PS:

It's nice to be posting again.

Spent the past 4 days posting to MuletsGalore on the D-WEB, and was running out of Mullet Dozens.

The way I see it is if this makes it so there are fewers scammers, trolls and bots making this forum so unpleasant, then it is all for a good cause.  Good job to the Audiogon folks for doing this.

Oh boy! Jason Bourne strikes again

I was asked and when I tried to comply, I was blocked. Twice. Third time lucky?

I did it but I disagree with the policy. If I want to sell something, yes. But just to post?

Will be interesting to see what kind of junk mail I start receiving.

@ibmjunkman  We don't share your email address. It's all good and safe.

@ibmjunkman

We assume that you are trying to reduce the automated posts that appear within threads and that the fix has resulted in temporary website instability, but it might be good to pat your collective selves on the back and announce to all members that you are in the process of trying to secure the forums and that temporary inconveniences might ensue.

“We don't share your email address. It's all good and safe.‘

That is what 90% of companies that have a breech say. 😊

Didn't any of you notice that admin answered an entirely different question?  This thread is about physical addresses not virtual ones. What about physical junk mail? That was was the above reply was referring to.

I verified things the morning it was first required.  I assumed it was to fight bots. I was surprised to not see a thread about it.  I guess the people who wanted to start a thread were the ones having a problem getting on.

Jerry

I don’t find many problems with admin here. I read the free forum and infrequently buy something, usually from a dealer.

Most audio sites I frequent don’t promote services or monetize the interaction.

Bad part for some, if you act like a child, you’re out of there!

Just do what I've done for years.

Get an address at a UPS Store under a fake name, a location with a real physical address,  and use Burner phones by the carton.  Screw the Man trying to track me 😉.

not a big deal, just letting you know that I knew...

Maybe they were X'd to keep the word from getting out so that no one would know????

"Posting on Audiogon - more fun than a barrel of monkeys!"

Reminds me of Audio Asylum. I was on there quite a bit in the past, can't remember what my user name was. As I remember it seemed pretty high-speed back then. I checked there a couple days ago and it seemed very stale, two word answers and little followup, at least in the spots I checked. Anybody here still using Audio Asylum?

I loved Vinyl Asylum in the past.

...and we thought the 'k' man was....well, what he wuz....

*L'ing, just because....*

@tonydennison I thought about that but the bot tenders are going to find out about it as soon as they try to sign up so hiding it doesn't seem necessary.

Jerry

@tonydennison, I check Audio Asylum every day to see if there’s anything new in the planar threads. New posts there are scant. MUG seems to have kicked the bucket a long time ago. It used to be pretty lively there in olden times.

@nonoise Agree that most everything one does on the web if possible is monetized. The forum side of Agon infromes and supports the buy/sell side and thus the need for those required fill in the blanks.

Our digital trails are a regrettable appendage of our life’s today. Some if it is good say if you have a medical problem or want to sell your speakers.

“I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.”  Julius Henry "Groucho" Marx

This is a test. Tried posting and was asked to verify phone #. They sent a code which I dittoed. Physical address already on file.

@wsrrsw My favorite Groucho Marx quote. 😀

I received two other notices of someone "mentioning" me only to discover deleted posts. Is this the audio equivalent of a drive-by? How brave and mature.

I remember a certain someone who's been repeatedly banned doing that as a matter of course from getting his posts taken down by the mods, which of course, led to his getting banned all over again.

History can repeat itself as well as rhyme. 👍

falconquest:

A land line is a telephone hard connected to the network via bell wire (the way it all started).

We also have a "modern" portable battery powered phone hooked up to the main line for use on the patio.

The computer is connected to our other (2ND) land line as I feel that it is more secure than WiFi.
